Contribution to PERS after taxes

I contributed to Nevada PERS (Public Employees Retirement System) 50/50 with my employer. It shows on W-2 in the box "14 Other" as EEPERSPART. Where do I enter it on the return as the deduction? I did try to enter it in the Retirement Savings Contribution Credit, but it would not go to update when I click on it. I contributed $7,000 after taxes.

Contribution to PERS after taxes

You do not enter it anywhere as a deduction on your return.

And the box 14 contributions may not qualify for the form 8880 credit ....Line 2 instructions are here:

Include on line 2 any of the following amounts.

  •  Elective deferrals to a 401(k) or 403(b) plan (including designated Roth contributions under section 402A), or to a governmental 457, SEP, or SIMPLE plan.
  •  Voluntary employee contributions to a qualified retirement plan as defined in section 4974(c) (including the federal Thrift Savings Plan).
  •  Contributions to a 501(c)(18)(D) plan.

It's hard to believe that I can't get a break for $7,000 after taxes contribution?

Contribution to PERS after taxes

Well if the plan isn't one of those then you don't get a break ... the tax break comes later when you take the distributions ... at that point your contributions coming back to you are tax free.

Hey have you figured anything out? Im in the same boat, was wondering if i could deduct what I've paid into it. Paying extra taxes on 20k with no deduction is terrible.

Contribution to PERS after taxes

You can't deduct employee contributions to the Nevada Public Employees Retirement System.  Most pension systems typically work that way, with employer contributions being considered "pre-tax" and employee contributions being considered "after-tax"  When you do retire and start drawing a pension from Nevada PERS, the amount of the payment attributed to your contributions will not be taxable.
