If I am not mistaken, I interpret the instructions to mean that you should not get "Needs Review" as it relates to leaving the fields blank or 0 in the box for 2020 Form 8915-E, line 4, column b. But, if you do, you should be able to correct those fields when you go through the Federal Review. The program will prompt you with the fields that need to be corrected. Note: You may also need review for other unrelated issues.
Yes. By entering the second 1/3 of the distribution, you are subject to 1/3 more tax.
Oh yes - I was just trying to establish whether Op had successfully entered the information regarding the distribution.
No
Same here. I’ve followed the instructions exactly a dozen times but I still get the “Needs Review” and so far haven’t received any additional troubleshooting tips or steps to get me out of this loop.
Mine does not change at all. Please help!
Did you go through the review? What did it say?
Please provide more info. What specifically does not change? If you’re referring to the tax not increasing have you looked in the 1040 form to see if you had already entered 1/3 of the distribution? If you already entered it the tax would not change.
A great tax expert at TurboTax figured out what I was doing wrong. When I selected that I had taken a qualified distribution in 2020, it asked for some info from my 2020 form. There were three lines asking for the value from line 9, line 10, then line 9 again. I think.
Anyway, the first one said enter the value, and then mentioned put zero if the box was checked on this line in your 2020 tax form. I did not put that value because I though the only option es zero or blank due to the wording and also due to them asking for the same thing on the third line. In actuality I needed to put the numerical value from that line. That fixed my problem instantly.
Just curious . Are you able to get the individual help without upgrading to a better more expensive version of TurboTax?
I did, one rep told me no. So I asked to be escalated to a supervisor. Then that rep got me to a tax expert.
You were lucky ! Others still having problems should ask the free expert to be escalated. I guess we did not position our request properly. Our free expert told us that we would have to upgrade in order to get someone who really understood the problem. Very annoying !
I was told the same thing. I asked it I could be escalated to someone else, she said yes a supervisor. That is who sent me to the tax expert.
I'm in California. What should I enter for the California tax return portion?
I took a covid-19 401k distribution in 2020 and spread it over 3 years. Does everything automatically carry over from my federal tax return? Or do I need to add/subtract something? I want to make sure only 1/3 of the distribution I took in 2020 shows as income in 2021.
I think once you get your information correctly entered for your federal return the State will compute automatically . That’s how it worked for our NC return .
