Box 1 is empty. My retired spouse passed away last year. Must I file by mail, or can I just put $5 in box 1 and carry on?

Boxes 3 and 5 have amounts, as well as Box 12.

Yes, you should be able to put $1 in box 1 to e-file your return. Try it and if successful e-file the return.
