Completing my extension for 2018

Hope your spouse is doing better now.  Just go back to the account using the exact same account and userID to finish preparing the 2018 return.    If you made an estimated payment of tax due when you requested the extension make sure it is shown on line 17 of your Form 1040.

If you do not remember how to access your account:

Many people have multiple TT accounts and forget how to access them.  Log out of the account you are in now.

Or did you use the desktop version of TurboTax?  If so, the files are on your own hard drive or any backup device you used like a flash drive.

Your extension gave you extra time to prepare your 2018 tax return documents.  It did not give you extra time to pay.  If you did not pay your estimated 2018 tax due by April 15, 2019 then when the IRS receives your 2018 return and your payment, they will calculate your penalty/interest and bill you later.  TurboTax will not calculate the penalty or interest.

You have until October 15, 2019 to e-file your 2018 tax return.  After that, e-filing for 2018 will be shutting down, and a 2018 return will have to be printed, signed and mailed instead.  The online software will also be shutting down, so if you are not finished preparing your 2018 return by then, you will have to download desktop software to a full PC or Mac to finish the return.

When you requested your extension you were supposed to pay your estimated tax due.  Did you enter the payment you made into your tax return?  Go to Federal>Deductions and Credits>Estimates and Other Taxes Paid>Other Income Taxes  This will show up on line 17 of your Form 1040

If you are getting a tax refund, there is no penalty for filing late, and you have three years from the filing deadline to file and receive the refund.

Completing my extension for 2018

This is a final for the extension I filed in April.  What do I do different or add?  Please advise ASAP, so I may get this completed today.

Completing my extension for 2018

@1899

So you have not yet completed the preparation of your 2018 return?    You have missed the October 15, 2019 deadline now.

 Online tax preparation for 2018 is now shut down, and you cannot start a new 2018 return online. Now you will need to use downloaded desktop software on a full PC or Mac.  You will also have to print, sign and mail your 2018 return because e-filing is shut down for 2018.  The deadline was midnight October 15, 2019.

If you are getting a tax refund there will be no penalty for filing late.  If you owe tax due, you are subject to late filing penalties and interest, for which you will be billed by the IRS later.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS and/or your state received the return.

Do make sure that you entered the estimated payment you made when you requested your extension:

When you requested your extension you were supposed to pay your estimated tax due.  Did you enter the payment you made into your tax return?  Go to Federal>Deductions and Credits>Estimates and Other Taxes Paid>Other Income Taxes  This will show up on line 17 of your Form 1040
