How do federal and state taxes and a tax home work if I am a travel nurse and my husband is active duty military? My travel assignments are wherever my husband is stationed. Our home of record for military purposes is Nebraska at his parentʻs home. Our cars and drivers licenses are registered to their address but at the moment we do not pay any utilities or rent at my in-laws. We do pay for rent and utilities where we are stationed. Can we use our home of record as our tax home for my travel stipends? Do we have to arrange some kind of payment to my in-laws to qualify that as our tax home or is that necessecary with it being our home of record?

To start with, your federal tax return will be the same regardless of what states are posted to your return.
