From a tax standpoint, your State of Legal Residency (SLR) is considered your “domicile” or “resident” state as long as you are on active duty. Even if you are stationed in another state, you’re still considered a resident of your SLR.
In TurboTax, under My Info, you should report your Resident state as Wisconsin and prepare a WI resident state tax return.
If you worked a part-time job and you earned income in the state of Louisiana, you should also report that in My Info under I lived in another state in 2019. In this case, you would prepare a Louisiana nonresident state tax return.
You prepare your state tax returns by following these steps.
- Down the left side of the screen, click on State.
- Across the top of the screen click on Your state returns.
- At the screen Status of your state returns, select Add another state.
