If you are self employed, rent can be deducted as a business expense on schedule C when the rent is for property used for the business.
Rent you pay for your primary residence is not reported anywhere on your federal tax return. However, if your state taxes personal income and offers what is sometimes referred to as a "renter's credit", you'll deal with that after you have completed the federal return, and started the state return.
