Where do I enter rental income on a NY state return

Please try following the instructions below to assist you in entering your rental income into your federal tax return, which will then transfer over to your state return.

In TurboTax, you would go Federal TaxesWages & Income, then Rental Properties and Royalties.

  • Income from Rentals or Royalty Property You Own, click Yes
  • So far You're not a Real Estate Professional click Continue
  • Is This a Rental Property or Royalty?, click Continue
  • What Type of Rental is This?, Vacation or short-term
  • Was This Property Rented for All of 2017?, click Continue
  • Property Ownership, click Continue
  • Let's Find Out if You're an Active Participant in This Property, click Continue
  • Did You Pay Anyone $600 or More for Work Related to This Property?, click Continue
  • Is Your Property in Any of These Designated Areas?, click Continue
  • Review Your ___ Rental Summary page
  • Rental Income, Checks, Cash, Forms 1099-MISC and 1099-K, click Start
  • Was Income for This Property Reported to You on Form 1099-MISC? Select
Yes, all of my income for this property was reported to me on Form(s) 1099-MISC.
  • Let's enter the info from your 1099-MISC

You may need to add New York, by clicking Add Another State

  • We've Recommended a Residency Status,
    Nonresident (Form IT-203)
  • Confirm Your Permanent Home Address
  • Make It Easier for New York to Contact You
  • Lived in New York State?
  • New York Income Allocation, click Yes
  • Rentals, Royalties, Partnership will appear, there will be a Federal Income amount and you will need to allocate the New York Portion.
