I reported oil royalty income (under 1k), and a pop up said I need to upgrade to Premium because "you sold investments" and need Schedule D. Is this right? I didn't sell.

Royalty income is reported on schedule E, not schedule D. Are you certain that you entered the form correctly? If the software thinks this is a sale it may have been entered into the incorrect area.

Under wages and income you need to scroll down to 'Rental Property and Royalties' and enter any royalties received in that section.
