Here's where to enter Savings Bond interest, which should be Box 3 of a Form 1099-INT.or a substitute 1099-INT.

  • Log in and open your 2016 tax return ("take me to my return.").
  • Once open, click on SEARCH in the top right..
  • Enter the term savings bonds (without quotes).
  • Choose Jump to savings bonds.
  • First screen asks "Did you receive any interest income?"   Yes.
  • Next screen asks for your bank/brokerage.
  • You will eventually get to the screen displayed as image #1 below.
  • You will need to place a checkmark to display additional data fields.
  • You should now see Box 3 (see image #2 below) titled "Savings Bonds and treasury interest."
  • Make your entries and continue answering any followup questions until all of that interview is over.
  • One of the screens will say "Tell us if any of these uncommon situations apply."
If you have been reporting your savings bond interest as you've earned it (instead of all at once when you redeem it), and you redeemed your bond in 2016, you may need to adjust the reportable interest to reflect only the interest reportable this year.   You would place a checkmark for "I need to adjust the taxable amount."  And the next screen will ask for more info on the adjustment.

I added this to the answer above:
If you have been reporting your savings bond interest as you've earned it (instead of all at once when you redeem it) and you redeemed your bond in 2016, you may need to adjust the reportable interest to reflect only the interest reportable this year.   I stated in the answer above how to do that, if applicable.
