I’m a real estate professional who actively participates and manages my rental properties. TurboTax is considering the losses passive and not active. How do I change it?

We have always been able to deduct the loss against regular income. How do I change this?

You may have skipped the question at the very beginning of the rental section that asked if you were a real estate professional. It will ask about the number of hours you worked and what percentage of time you spent.

 

Qualifications. You qualified as a real estate professional for the year if you met both of the following requirements.

• More than half of the personal services you performed in all trades or businesses during the tax year were performed in real property trades or businesses in which you materially participated.

• You performed more than 750 hours of services during the tax year in real property trades or business.
