These costs for improvements are added to the cost basis of the home that was sold to reduce the gain on the sale. Capital improvements become part to the cost of the home. Repairs and maintenance are not deductible on your main home (cleaning, utilities, painting, repair to a roof versus replacing a roof, etc).
