Rent is money paid to a landlord for the rental or lease of your principal residence in Massachusetts. The maximum deduction amount is $3,000. It does not matter if you pay this to an individual or the housing authority.

When you enter into your Massachusetts tax return there will be a number of screens. Continue through them until you get to

Additional Massachusetts Deductions.
Select Paid rent to a landlord
Enter the annual amount of rent paid
