It depends.

You do not have to file a Missouri return if you are not required to file a federal return. If you are required to file a federal return, you may not have to file a Missouri return if:

  • you are a resident and have less than $1,200 of Missouri adjusted gross income;
  • you are a nonresident with less than $600 of Missouri income; or
  • your Missouri adjusted gross income is less than the amount of your standard deduction plus your personal exemption.

Please view page 4 in the Missouri link below.

Thanks for your message below Katrina, just to clarify, if I'm a nonresident of Missouri with only a small amount of farm pasture rental income (let's just say $12-13,000) and the standard MO deduction is $24,000 (I believe this is correct), I wouldn't need to file a MO State Income tax.  Correct??

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

You would need to file a NR (non resident) tax return based on Page 1 of the Missouri 2020 Tax Guide  which states that you need to file if you had non-resident income greater than $600.

You may not owe taxes, but you are still required to file based on the income guidelines.
