Another Bug - Passive Operating Loss ... sum of losses in individual years should not be greater than the total loss

On the Carryovers to 2024 Smart Worksheet here is what is on the screen:

 G. Schedule E suspended Loss -32049

Disallowed Passive Losses:

   Before 2018    25,505

    2020 J Operating Loss  -3055

     2022 S Operating Loss -22450

2023 S Operating Loss - 32049              <-       this is the entry that Turbotax is complaining about - what do I put instead?

This experience has been reported and is under investigation. You may sign up for updates here: Why is the capital loss carryover screen showing incorrect calculations? Even if this doesn't seem to apply to your situation, the form & calculations will be updated in TurboTax when the investigation is complete.

Another Bug - Passive Operating Loss ... sum of losses in individual years should not be greater than the total loss

Its more than a month later now.. Is there a solution? Even entering lower values does not make this error go away. The website does not let me file my taxes because it says there are problems that need to be fixed first. This is the only problem and am upset this is not resolved. In past years this calculation was automatic and did  not cause issues. Furthermore manually editing Schedules with the Turbotax website is basically impossible, as one can only enter data in the Turbotax webiste field, not in the Schedule directly.. So how do I circumvent this issue? Also, I am afraid this error will forever haunt me in future tax returns if this error is not corrected for my 2024 return. I have tried entering the lower value   (last years value, and thereby completely foregoing my current years losses), but this does not resolve the problem and the same error persists..

THIS IS A SERIOUS FAULT!!!  I HAVE ALREADY PAID AND AM NOW STUCK IN A TAX RETURN I CANNOT FILE!!

When you run Smart Check, TurboTax will present a section of Schedule E Worksheet Carryovers to 2024 Smart Worksheet, Disallowed Passive Losses by Year and Type. For some properties, the carryovers are out of sequence. For instance, 2022 is on the 2021 line. Or the 2023 number is on the 2022 line.

NOTE: Please use the Chrome browser to access this table when running Smart Check.

To fix this, enter the correct number starting with the most recent year. Then move up the schedule until all years are correct. This may be easier if you can access your 2023 return and print the Schedule E worksheet.

We are not aware of an estimated date for this experience to be revised before the tax filing deadline. The ultimate fix is to 1) clear and start over in TurboTax Online or 2) transfer your 2023 return into a new 2024 return using TurboTax for Desktop.

PatriciaV,

Are you on the desktop version when you say to use chrome browser and run smartcheck than edit the lines? I have the online version.

Has it worked for anybody to clear and start over in Turbotax online? How do you clear?

To clear and start over in TurboTax.

  • Go to Tax Tools

Thank you.  I don't have confidence that the bug is fixed and that it will work though.  Has anybody fixed it by clearing and doing over online?
