License Code Multiple Request by TT 2019 Desktop App

I am one of the lucky folks receiving multiple requests to input the 2019 Turbotax license code. 2019 Turbotax Deluxe desktop CD on Windows 10. I tried all of TT’s suggested actions to correct the problem. I finally uninstalled the software and then reinstalled the software. I again entered the license code. It is now working. At least for the time being. I am afraid to close the application for fear it will not launch next time. Does this mean I have used 2 of my 5 available licenses? Are there any other updates from TT on resolving this issue? Thank you.

1-2-2020: Well, my hopes have been dashed for an easy resolution. TT is again asking for the Activation Code. Since I re-activated TT on 12/18/2019, I have opened and closed the app more than 50 times with no problems. During that time TT updated three times OK.

I received the following updates before TT asked me again for the Activation Code:

12-18-2019: Critical Program Updates (Release 12/11/19), Fed Tax Forms Updates (Release 12/17/19), Wisconsin (Release 12/18/19).

12-25-2019: Help and Support (Release 12/24/19)

1-2-2020: Fed Tax Forms Updates (Release 1/2/20), Critical Program Updates (Release 1/2/20).

Later on 1-2-2020 TT loaded the following updates prior to again asking for an Activation Code on restart: Wisconsin (Release 1/2/20)

I have spent way too many man-hours trying to get a $50 piece of software to function correctly. This is not an isolated problem as can be seen by reading multiple comments on Amazon and also on this Community Discussion Blog. There are way too many folks fighting this problem for it to be an anomaly. I’m done. After 20 years with TurboTax, it is time to move on.

1-27-2020: The following has worked for me... So far…

I am using a Lenovo T530 Laptop with Windows 10 Home, Version 1909. Intel i5-3210M CPU, 500 GB Hard Drive. 8GB RAM. Norton 360 Antivirus software. Spectrum ISP.

Since my last post on 1-2-2020, I have been able to open and update TT with no problems. However, I have turned off my Norton Antivirus and Smart Firewall before each attempt. As TT refuses to publicly admit there is an issue with the TT software, it is impossible to determine if my issue has apparently (maybe) been resolved by turning off the Norton software, or if TT has made a ‘Behind the Scenes’ modification to their software via one of the updates. I keep seeing posts saying those folks fighting this problem are in the minority. But I am betting the minority is large enough to put a dent into TT’s sales numbers if TT does not find a solution. It may take another 2014 situation to get Intuit’s attention.

So, should I or should I not close my opened software? I used the CD, installed it, prepared my tax return, and after a week or so, tried opening it. It asked for updating the software and after that asked for activating the license! Called their help desk and was advised to enter the code again. Now, I am keeping it open and planning on filing the tax before it asks for the activation code again! There is an issue and they are not resolving it. Have been using their software forever, and this is the first time I am not comfortable with this software. They have had glitches; but this is weird.

Just want to provide my experience as it is a little different than what has been said.  In my case, I had a new Windows 10 computer and installed Turbo Tax Deluxe 2019, registered it and closed it without starting my taxes.  A few days later I attempted to start my taxes and received the request to re-register.  I did not re-register, but found my way to this forum.  Thanks to everyone providing a little insight I was able to find a solution.  I removed all external USB drives and equipment, which did not help.  Because it was a new computer I had no Anti-Virus or firewall outside of what Windows 10 provides, but I turned those off to no avail.  I turned off my VPN and did not allow it to start when I booted - no help.  After seeing others talk about removing external USB drives, it got me thinking about the drive I added after installing TT - an internal hard drive connected directly to the motherboard.  I temporarily unplugged this drive, rebooted Windows and sure enough, TT opened without requesting me to re-register.  I will need to complete my taxes before putting this drive back in as doing so caused the re-registration to appear again.   As others have said, DO NOT continue to enter your activation code multiple times.  If you are receiving the re-registration there is likely something you can turn off, un-do, uninstall or remove to get it working.  Not that you should have to.

I have several post here, in different threads.  Only thing I have to say--I left TT some time ago, have already filed through H&R without all this B__l S__T.  Will never use TT  again. Never again.

Finally figured out exactly what the issue is.  When I installed TT, I had a microSD card installed in my laptop card reader slot.  That got removed at some point...then weeks later when I wanted to resume my taxes, I get stuck in the endless loop of error 630!  I simply installed the microSD card reader (and a random card) back into the laptop reader slot...rebooted machine...and voila, TT started immediately without any error!  TT, GIVE ME A FRIGGIN BREAK!  I spent two hours on the phone with you to resolve this issue and NOTHING.  I had to look at the community forum to figure this out.

THANK YOU!   This worked.  I tried everything that everyone else posted in this thread, but nothing worked.

I must have had my external drive plugged into my usb port when I installed TT.   I could not get past the activation error.  I plugged my external drive back into my computer and clicked on TT program and it came right up with no errors this time.   I appreciate you posting this resolution. You saved my hours on the phone with TT and now I can file my taxes.

AWESOME!! So glad you got it working.   I spent a couple hrs on the phone with customer service, who could not solve the issue and ended up loading it on my wife's computer... Until I figured out the problem!  I figured I was not the only one experiencing this problem and wanted to make sure I shared my solution with everyone! Glad to have saved you a headache! Good luck with the taxes.

I have the same problem. It is now 7/12/2020. I tried all the steps with their instruction and still not working. The help from TT staff is to spend money to buy a new cd.

I had the same circumstance, multiple requests to re-enter activation code when starting TurboTax. I had used TT repeatedly in prior days without being prompted to re-enter code. The I noticed I had a USB drive plugged in now, that was NOT there when I initially installed and activated TT. I believe TT takes note of your system at startup (CPU, RAM, Storage, etc) to identify each installation of your allotted 5. I removed the USB drive and TT started with incident. If you change your computer, even the temporary addition or removal of external storage, TutboTax will see it as a"different" computer.  Lots of people having this problem, lots of interesting fixes... I just picked yours, because it was typical of the event.  Good luck.

Awesome you got it working.  I shared my post with the hopes other could benefit and avoid the frustration I went through.   TT tech support needs to read these threads so the can immediately help users with a solution...vs spending hours on the phone trying new registration codes, unistalling, etc.

This morning (7/13/20), I contacted TurboTax support about the "multiple requests for the license code" problem.  I also got locked out after a 6th attempt at USING the software (not installing it on multiple PCs).  TurboTax was more than aware of the problem, couldn't have been more apologetic about it, and the person I talked to was very nice and helpful.  She immediately gave me a new activation code, which worked right away.  The whole problem was solved in about 5 minutes.  Yes, it's a shame the product has this bug, but for me, they resolved it right away and restored my faith in TurboTax.

Thank you community!

Same USB external device problem, Windows 10 machine.  Worked fine back in April, then tried to go back in to finish taxes last week, tried opening the program and was asked to update, which I did, then landed at the enter activation code page.  All my installs used up, error 630.  I called TT, and after 45 minutes, they did give me a new license code with five new installs which I appreciated.  I entered new code, logged in, was good to go, then closed out of the program and when I went to open the program again, same situation--asked to update program, and then to enter activation code.

Thanks to the savvy community here, I figured out the culprit was an external CD/DVD Rom drive plugged in via USB used on initial install of program using TT CD Rom.  The drive was unplugged when I went back to use TT and started experiencing the activation code issue.  Simply plugged in the empty CD/DVD drive, and the program worked as before, going straight to stored filings without asking for activation code again.  Absurd.

A million thanks to those who identified this as a machine-hardware detection issue, and a MILLION aw-shi?'s to the TTax developer team for testing license locations this way.

TTax AGAIN demanded a re-activation today (about the 10th time on this, my only TTax pc). I have a hot-swap backup bay. Read these messages, ejected today's backup drive, and TTax launched happily without demanding re-activation.

Thanks, community!

None of TurboTax Support suggestions worked.  Caused me to purchase another license, waiting for refund from Intuit right now.  TurboTax still asking License Code even with my new purchase.  Sigh.

While trying to reinstalling the TurboTax,  I think I found the fix.

You can do "Repair TurboTax" and it seems to work.   To get to "Repair TurobTax", do the following:

  1.   Go to Uninstall TurboTax under "Apps & Features"  in the "Setting" window.
  2.   Click on "TurboTax"
  3.   Click on "Uninstall" button
  4. A window will pop up.  Click on "Repair TurboTax" button.  When it is done close the uninstall window.
  5. When it is done,  start TurboTax.  Hopefully, it will not ask for License Code again.

Good luck.

I have trouble with "activation" for TurboTax 2019 Deluxe on my desktop.  I tried the "Repair Turbotax" but it didn't work after the repair.  This is so frustrating!  Don't know what else to do.

I turned on my USB-connected Canon printer to print out a Quicken Tax Summary and TT started asking me for an activation code.   I've been using TT all day doing different returns and jumping between different returns; I'll bet I've opened and closed TT thirty times today alone, with no problems.

Turned the printer off and got in again with no problems.......

Before installing TurboTax on a PC, it's best to close any open programs, including firewall and virus-protection programs (but don't forget to turn them back on after installation is complete). I have provided an FAQ link below to help you with the installation and also included one to troubleshoot installation and running TurboTax for Windows:
