I am having a problem with TurboTax Basic 2021 200% depreciation for a 5 year asset.

TurboTax estimates $3,416 expenses for $17,082 of appliances installed and started using Sep 1, 2021.  I expected the amount to be $1,992 (3.5 months at $569).   FYI, $3,416 is the amount for 12 month depreciation using 5 years of straight line on $17,082.  If this is a bug, please acknowledge and provide an estimated fix time.  If this is not a bug, please provide directions how to enter double declining basis for a mid year installation.

currently, depreciation is computed per IRC sec 168 using one of these MACRS methods:

    • The 200% declining balance method over a GDS recovery period. however, there is a convention that must be applied see below
    • The 150% declining balance method over a GDS recovery period.
    • The straight line method over a GDS recovery period.
    • The straight line method over an ADS recovery period

Turbo-tax is correct. with MACRS depreciation unless 40% or more of property, excluding real estate, is placed in service during the last quarter of the tax year the half-year convention applies.  this means for 5-year assets the first year would be 20% (1/2 of 40%) for 5 year property unless you choose one of the other methods

then under MACRS 200 % DB method

    year 2 - 32%

    year 3 - 19.2%

    year 4 and 5- 11.52%

    year 6  5.76%

for more information see IRS pub 946

In my TurboTax Business return for 2021 the raw data on 1099 Dividends shows Total dividends greater the Qualified dividends,  When the program processes  the data and loads it into the K 1 work sheet the Qualified value is greater the the total value on line 2a.  The only way to get passed this is to override the figure placed there by the 1041 processing.

When using the withholdings calculator if you move the slider up and down the expected return increases exponentially. I have a screen recording if you need it.

There is a bug in Turbo Tax Business 2021 in preparing W2 (cd windows)

When you go to put FID# it skips spaces. Also, in the telephone number and zip code it is automatically toggling

    between the two.

When entering data for an RMD I can only enter info for myself OR my wife.  When I finish with my RMD it takes me back to the Wages and Income Screen.  When I try to enter my wife's information, the amount is already there but it is the amount from my entry.  I can enter one but not both of our data.

You can enter separate RMD info for yourself and your wife in TurboTax.

Make sure your wife's 1099-R entry specifies that it belongs to her. Then answer the follow-up questions about her RMD.

When I click on the 529 accounts button on the New York State return, TurboTax signs me out.

As of 20 January 2021 at 1:06EST I cannot find Schedule 3 of 1040 in Turbo Tax Deluxe 2021 edition.  Is this coming in future updates?  Yes, I have performed the "Check for Updates" within the software.

In the TurboTax Deluxe program I tested, Schedule 3 does appear.

In FORMS mode, use the 'Open Form' icon at the upper left to pull it up.

If you are unable to do so, you could try uninstalling/reinstalling your program and updating (clear cache & cookies first.)

Schedule 3 is where certain nonrefundable credits are reported.  These credits are the child and dependent care expense credit, foreign tax credit, education credits, residential energy credit, retirement savings contribution credit and other general business credits.

Turbo Tax is making a calculation error on line 12b on form 1040, when I do the final review, after state taxes, it changes my charitable donations from $600 to $300.  After oil does this it tells me I have an error and I need to change it back to $600. I save it and then go back through to check things and it does the same thing again, even though I saved it and it should be $600 in line 12b of form 1040 worksheet. I tried calling and the computer generated person, won't let me speak to a real human unless I have a purchased the rights to do so. This is not very good customer service and I'm not happy with this.

For the TurboTax desktop editions -

To remove the error I went into Forms mode and deleted the Charitable Organization Worksheet.  Then on the Form 1040 Worksheet for Line 12b removed the $300 amount so Line 12b is now blank (empty).

Going back to Step-by-Step I completed the Deductions & Credits section without entering anything for a charitable donation.  Continuing through the screens until landing on the screen labeled Charitable Cash Contributions under Cares Act, I entered $600.  Continued through Final Review without error.

For the TurboTax online editions -

The problem appears to be that a charitable donation was entered in the Deductions and Credits section of the program when you are only eligible for the Standard Deduction.

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen

    Click on Tools

    Click on Delete a form

Scroll through the all the forms, schedules and worksheets listed and delete all the Charitable Organization forms listed.

When completed with removing forms click on Continue With My Return at the bottom of the list.

Click on Federal on the left side of the screen

Click on Deductions & Credits at the top of the screen

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on Wrap up tax breaks

Continue through the screens.  After the screen showing that you are getting the Standard Deduction the following screen is Charitable Cash Contributions under Cares Act.  Enter $600 if filing Jointly or $300 for all other filing status'.  The federal review and the Final Review should no longer show an error for the charitable donation.
