I am located in NC. I have already filled out lines 15 through 17 on my W-2 form; why, during the final review, does it still indicate that Line 23 requires a State ID?

Hi Mary Thank you for responding. However thats just the issue, there are no duplicates listed. It's an error in TT, and they haven't addressed it yet. I was reading the other people's comments who are having the sane issue and there isn't seem to be a set resolution to this. ??? Anybody that has multiple w2s issued from a single employer i.e IHSS or government issued w2s, are being mistaken for duplicates in TT. Really disappointed in TT this year. Too many bugs and not enough support. Really considering switching out of using TT going forward.

Are they preparing a federal or state tax return? Are they trying to claim you as a dependent. Please clarify.

I am using TurboTax Business Desktop to file an estate tax return for CA (Form 541). After e-filing the CA return, I receive an email from Intuit saying the state has rejected the submission but there was no error code from CA and TurboTax Business says there are no errors in the return. After spending couple days on this issue & trying all the suggestions (turn off VPN, super patch, run as administrator, clear cache, ...), I was able to e-file CA Form 541 successfully. The issue is a s/w bug in TurboTax Business. On Form 541 line 45 with the box for Form 5805 checked, TurboTax left the entry blank. The correct entry is to transfer the value from Form 5805 line 13 to Form 541 line 45. After I manually entered the value on Form 541 line 45, then the the tax return was successfully e-filed.

No, not if she is a W-2 employee. Even if your wife’s employer does not provide her with an office and she is required to work from home, the IRS does not allow employees to deduct unreimbursed employee expenses.
She would qualify for a federal home office deduction if she has self-employment income. If she performs freelance work or runs a side business as an independent contractor from that office, she could potentially deduct a portion of her home expenses. However, she still cannot use those expenses to offset the income from her W-2 job.
Also, some states still allow unreimbursed employee expenses, so check your specific state's instructions as you may be eligible for a state deduction.

The same thing happened to me. Very frustrating to have to print & send tax returns. The program is supposed to work, and it's not cheap. Maybe it's time to switch to a better program.

Step by Step page says: "Your info should match your 1099‑B exactly. You can add any situations next." I have a gifted security in the TurboTax sales section "Unknown term basis not reported to the IRS". On my actually 1099-B, it says "Transactions for which basis is not reported to the IRS and Term is Unknown" and my cost basis and date acquired are listed as "Unknown". However, those aren't accepted in TurboTax. The dropdown for box 1b "Something other than a date" only has one choice: Various (or more than one date). If I attempt to leave the cost basis blank, then TurboTax says "We still need some required info." There are pages after that which allow me to add cost basis "We noticed there's an issue with your cost basis...Let us know if you'd like to make any changes" and time period "Did you acquire this investment more than a year before you sold it?". However, I'm not sure what to enter on the initial page since it continues to say info is missing even if I make the adjustments on the subsequent pages. I have TurboTax Home and Business which is not a choice in the product selection for this support page.

To enter Unreimbursed Partner Expenses (UPE) in TurboTax, you must navigate to a specific "supplemental business expenses" screen that appears after you have entered the basic information from your Schedule K-1.
Where to Find the UPE Screen
The screen is often missed because it is located several pages deep into the K-1 interview. Follow these steps to reach it:
Go to Federal > Wages & Income > Schedules K-1, Q and select Start or Update next to Partnerships/LLCs (Form 1065).
Select Edit next to the partnership for which you have expenses.
Continue through the interview, clicking through the screens where you entered the amounts from Boxes 1 through 20.
Look for the "Describe the Partnership" Screen
Check the first box: "I am required to pay supplemental business expenses on behalf of this partnership/LLC for which I am not reimbursed.".
Clicking Continue will then trigger the follow-up screens where you can enter specific expenses, such as:
Business mileage (using the standard rate or actual expenses).
Business use of home (home office).
Other miscellaneous expenses (supplies, travel, etc.).

Assuming I understand you correctly, a credit based on a Certificate for Income Tax Adjustment (commonly associated with a Mortgage Credit Certificate (MCC) or specific state-issued environmental/economic credits is entered in a specific path in the tax program.
Open or continue your return.
Under Federal tab, Click on Deductions & Credits, and then Scroll down Your Home (or Other Deductions and Credits), and then Click on Start/Revisit next to Mortgage Interest Credit (if the certificate is an MCC for your home loan) or Other Tax Credits.
You will be prompted to enter the information from your certificate, such as the Certificate Number, the Issue Date, and the Adjustment Amount.
The IRS uses specific forms depending on what your certificate represents. The program will generate these based on your entries.
Mortgage Credit Certificate (MCC) --> Form 8396
General Business Credits --> Form 3800
Residential Clean Energy --> Form 5695
Note: If your certificate is for a State tax credit rather than a Federal one, you must wait until you finish the Federal section; the information will carry over to the State interview where you can apply it to your state tax liability.
Important: when you claim a credit based on a specific certificate, the IRS requires you to keep it in your records for at least three years after filing.
If the IRS sends a "matching notice," they will ask for a copy of that certificate to prove the adjustment is valid.
If the credit is larger than what you owe this year, check the certificate rules; (many allow you to "carry forward" the unused portion to 2026 or 2027).

I am having this same issue, and like other posters, deleting the form and recreating through the step-by-step just puts me in a perpetual do loop. Absolutely unconscionable that a software issue with a worksheet has been known for over a month, yet days before the filing deadline TT has not fixed the issue and has gone silent on the thread. If we all have to print and go stand in line on April 15, TT should be issuing some refunds to account for the wasted time and effort, since we paid them to alleviate that same headache, especially since they appear to be ignoring the pleas.

It’s always been in my parent’s name but under the trust. Both my parents have passed. The problem is TT isn’t letting me prorate the depreciation.
