MY DEPENDENT HAD A JOB If your dependent has a W-2 for his after-school job, summer job, etc. you do not include the information on your own return. You can still claim your child as a dependent on your own return.  He/she can file his own return for a refund of some of his withheld wages from boxes 2 or 17 (he won’t get back anything for Social Security or Medicare), but MUST indicate on it that he can be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return.  (Supervise this closely or prepare it for him!)   If your dependent’s earnings were over $400 and were reported on a 1099Misc or 1099NEC then he must file a return and pay self-employment tax for Social Security and Medicare.     You might also want to use free software from the IRS Free File versions: https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/

How to start a new joint return   You will not be able to merge two previous TT account to start your new joint return.  You can transfer ONE of your 2024 returns into a new return, so choose the most complicated one.  The other spouse’s information needs to be entered manually.  The first name you enter will be the “primary” taxpayer——and in subsequent years you need to keep the names in that order—do not try to change the order of the names.     When you enter the primary spouse’s information in My Info, you have to answer the question "Were you married?"  If you click the button for Married, then a drop down will appear that asks, "Do you want to file this return together with your spouse?"  Then you choose YES to file a joint return.  You enter your spouse's information into My Info.  Whenever you are entering income information there should then be a spot for you and for your spouse's income information.  WATCH for the names as you enter income on the screens.  Or when you click to add income it will prompt you to choose which spouse had the income.   When you prepare a joint return you include all the information for both spouses on the SAME tax return.  Include all of your personal information, all of your income from every source, all dependents (if any), all credits and deductions for both of you.  You get ONE refund with both names on it.   And…keep a record of how to access the “old” account for your spouse in case a need comes up to print it or find information from it.  TT will save it online for seven years,

Make sure that your name and social security number match exactly what is on your social security card.  Some things that might affect your information from matching are:   If you recently changed your name or number, use the old one listed on your Social Security card. If your last name is hyphenated, enter the entire name in the field, including the hyphen. Match exactly what’s on your Social Security card. If you have multiple last names, enter only the last one. For example, Melissa Gomez Fernandez should be entered as Melissa Fernandez. If you have multiple last names and a middle name, use only the first last name listed on your card. For example, Melissa Juana Gomez Fernandez should be entered as Melissa Gomez. How do I fix e-file reject R0000-500-01?

What is the rejection code?   You can file an extension.  An extension does not give you extra time to pay your taxes, which are due on April 15, 2026.  Even if you can't pay your taxes by the deadline, file an extension anyway so you can avoid the late-filing penalty.       How do I file an IRS tax extension?   See all options for filing an extension here.   State Extensions

No one can fix your big mistake for you.   We have no access to your return.    Online is only for 2025 returns.  You cannot use online for a 2023 return.   You will need to clear out the 2023 information you entered online and use the account later for a 2025 return.   You cannot change the tax year.   The current online program is for 2025 only.   Only a 2025 return can be prepared online and only a 2025 return can be e-filed.   Online preparation and e-filing for 2022, 2023, and  2024 is permanently closed. Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.   To file a return for a prior tax year  If you need to prepare a return for 2022, 2023, or 2024  you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s) https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/ You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.   Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.   https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/state-taxes/contact-state-department-revenue/L9qVToi02_US_en_US?uid=m6e06um0     https://www.irs.gov/refunds   Refunds for tax years 2021 or earlier have been forfeited and will not be paid to you even if shown on the tax return form.  But if you owe tax due, you will still have to pay, and you will be billed later for the interest and penalties owed.  TurboTax will not calculate the penalties or  interest.   That will be done by the IRS/state after they receive your return with your payment of the tax due as shown on the tax form(s).       When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.   Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

I don't understand why people think this a great product, then.   This is the first time I've ever used a tax service.  I only did it because I had an income windfall last year and was afraid I'd miss provisions that only apply to people with higher incomes.  In retrospect, I'd have been better off doing it myself with the aid of a couple of online searches.  What with needing to submit a revised return, this will take me longer and give me a bigger headache than that would've.
