@prasanth-kotaru you spouse can  file Separate for the NC State return..... from the NC Dept of Revenue website:    "The filing status claimed on the federal return must also be claimed on the North Carolina income tax return.  Generally, if the taxpayer has not filed a federal income tax return, the taxpayer must claim the filing status to which the taxpayer is entitled under the Internal Revenue Code.  However, for a married couple filing a joint federal income tax return, if either the taxpayer or the taxpayer’s spouse is a nonresident and has no North Carolina taxable income for the taxable year, the filing status married filing separately may be claimed on the North Carolina income tax return.  Importantly, once a joint return is filed, separate returns may not be filed for that year after the due date of the return."
The overtime deduction doesn’t apply to California so you will not see it on the California return.

@ RajeevLimaye wrote: I tried the IRS Website to file an extension. Turbotax is NOT listed as IRS partner. I wonder why IRS kicked out Turbotax as their partner?  Choose an IRS Free File partner You can file an extension with one of these partners:   That's the wrong page at the IRS website.    You didn't use the link I provided above.  The page you listed is for tax return partners affiliated with the IRS for free tax return preparation.  TurboTax does not participate in that Free File program, and neither does H&R Block.  They both dropped out 3-4 years ago.      To file an extension request at the IRS website and pay the tax due amount you simply make a tax payment and designate the reason as "extension" (see steps lower down in my answer.)   Here are direct links:   To file an extension at the IRS website and pay out of bank account: https://www.irs.gov/payments/pay-personal-taxes-from-your-bank-account   To file an extension at the IRS website and pay by credit/debit card (be careful re: card fees) https://www.irs.gov/payments/pay-your-taxes-by-debit-or-credit-card   After you choose one of those methods, you will get a webform to fill out.  For example, if you pay out of your bank account, the form will have these fields: Apply payment to:  "Form 1040 - Income Tax" Reason for Payment:   Extension Tax period:  2025 Next screen:  Verify your identity by answering some questions from a prior return of your choice Continue answering screens and make the payment. When finished, print out your confirmation.

I signed up for"Expert Full Service" this year, because (and only because) there was a promotion.  My "expert" told me when we had our conversation that I'd get the discount price.  I uploaded all my documents over a week ago and we talked on the phone almost a week ago, but my taxes still aren't done. Every time I message it takes at least 24h to get a response, and tonight he told me he's not going to get them done in time to get the discount pricing??!!! And he won't be able to give me a price estimate until he "comes back on wednesday" (two days from now).   At this point I want to just cancel full service and do it myself (like I usually do). But I'm afraid if I click the "leave full service" option, I'll be starting from scratch.  I want to click "leave full service" to see what it would be like, but I want to have the option to stick with it if I change my mind.

For TurboTax fees?    Did you choose refund processing and has your federal refund been offset or delayed?   Is TurboTax getting ready to go in to your account to take out the fees?   Did you choose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund?  Is your refund taking an unusually long time to arrive?  Or was your refund seized to pay a debt you owed? if so, you signed an agreement that says TT can withdraw its fees from your account.  TurboTax would have sent several emails to you before they took the money out of your account.   https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/intuit-account-billing/bank-account-auto-debited-turbotax-fees/L3rDdVynu_US_en_US?uid=m6bdgedq   TURBOTAX SAYS: How do you justify debiting my account? The provision is spelled out in the Pay With My Refund Agreement, which you agreed to when you opted to pay with your refund. In addition, by clicking the "I Agree" button below, you electronically sign and authorize Intuit (through its third party processor) to debit the TurboTax Fees, Additional Products and Services Purchased and any applicable sales tax from your bank account number identified in the Agreement below, in the event that you do not receive a tax refund that is sufficient to pay for them.           No one in the user forum can resolve a billing issue.  If you have a question about your TurboTax fees or billing, make sure you use the word “billing” in your request for help.  Do not use the word “refund.”   https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/account-management/contact-turbotax/L2y9ZKpQB_US_en_US?uid=m5s9l2vh

You likely have received one IRS form W-2 with the income reported to a variety of states.   In most cases, the total of all of the box 16's will total box 1 income.   If this is the case, report the one W-2 box 1 through box 14.   Report each of the multiple state taxes boxes 15 through 17 as they are listed.

It is only required in certain situations; the requirements are the same for 2025 as they have been in the past.   When do I have to mail in my 1099-B?   Maybe your entries were not summarized this year.....As long as your return doesn't contain Form 8453 and you entered all of your 1099-B information, you do not need to mail anything in.

Yes, you can change your daughter's taxes to free filing. TurboTax does offer a free edition Roughly 3.7% of taxpayers qualify.   The free edition is for simple returns (1040 only with no extra schedules), but may upgrade users to paid versions if a specific form is needed or if premium services are selected.   You can try switching to the TurboTax free edition (if you are not already in it) if you haven't paid or filed yet. You can use this link: TurboTax Free Edition.   You can follow the instructions in this article to remove any unwanted fees Why am I being charged for TurboTax Free Edition?   If TurboTax is still charging you, you may have used a form that doesn't qualify for the "Free Edition."    Please return to Community if you have any additional information or questions and we would be happy to help.

Hi all, I receive a PhD stipend that is nontaxable in New Jersey. I have reported this stipend on my federal taxes and will be paying federal taxes on it. Turbotax instructs me to change/reduce the amount in the Scholarship and Fellowship Income column if I have a nontaxable scholarship in New Jersey. Would it be appropriate to change the amount to zero like I've done here (placeholder name of grantor + ID number)? When I list the actual income amount it says I have to pay New Jersey taxes on it.
@user17754657176 I suspect the $5,000 goes nowhere.  The $10,000 is the total foreign sourced income.  The $5,000 is a subset of that, not an addition.

I want to know why if this is credit toward retirement funds why isn't it compared as a 401k when it distinctly builds your retirement credit as  you work to gain retirement annuity but why does ssi treat this like a 401k when it is not? Thought it is building up to a pension plan eventually. They need to leave it open for ticket to work does not make sense for ssi/ ssdi recipients to have to roll it over or refund it. It builds more retirement .Do not understand as long as it is non liquidated. Makes no sense.

At the beginning of the return, in the My info section, right after you enter your name, is section for other situations.  One of the questions asks about the state you lived in on December 31.  Another gives you the option to mark if you lived in another state during the year, mark this and enter the other state and the dates.  When you get to the state returns, verify the residency information.     How do I allocate (split) income for a part-year state return? How do I file a part-year state return?

I am married filing jointly, and I am the main contact on our market place plan. I receive a W-2 but my wife is self-employed and relieved a 1099-NEC. We are under the impression that her self-employment status means that we can deduct our premiums but we are uncertain because my name is listed as the recipient on form 1095-A and my wife is listed as the recipient's spouse.

Dear TT Experts,   In past years, when ready to e-file, TT will instruct to mail Form 8453 with the 1099-B to IRS Austin, TX, But for the current 2025 tax return, TT Windows 11 Premier is not giving this instruction. Is it still an IRS requirement that TT forgot or the requirement has been eliminated?   Thank you so much!
