TurboTax filled in 5217.   Can you explain how this number came about? Is it a bug?   My token is: 9130354351733656-11971069   Thanks

My question is 1.  What date qualifies you for the tax credit:  Is it the date car placed in service or date I paid for the car? 2.  Am I still able to file for the credit if I am not able to obtain a clean Vehicle Seller's Report?  If so what information should I submit to the IRS in lieu of the report The back story details:  I purchased a previously owned Leaf at the end of 2024 but vehicle was put into service just after 2025.  I completed the information on Terbo Tax for a clean vehicle tax credit for a previously owned vehicle.  Information accepted and form 8936 was generated.  The car and I meet criteria for the credit HOWEVER I am not able to obtain a Clean Vehicle Seller's report from the dealership.   The car was purchased at the end of 2024 but not put into service until just after 2025.    The dealership said that the VIN of the car was not entered into the database at the time sale because the car was not yet 2 yrs old at the time I paid for it but was 2 yrs old by the time the car was put into service.  Terbo tax did accept the above information, generated form but electronic filing of my Federal taxes was declined as the VIN for this tax credit was not in the data base.

@RogerD1 @DavidD66   I have just re-tested my unusual RMD situation, and the Turbo Tax bug has NOT YET BEEN FIXED.   Reviewing Situation: I took part of my 2025 RMD from a fund (call it B) that officially had a ZERO RMD requirement because it did not exist at the end of 2024.  The account was created in 2025 due to being transferred from Pershing (call it A) (I mistakenly said Raymond James above - no matter) to Schwab.  In TTax, I specified RMD requirement for account B as ZERO.   Since I took part of my RMD from account A in 2025 before the transfer, I had a place in TTax to enter the account's RMD requirement, so my total RMD requirement was correctly entered.   TTax hits me with a penalty.   Work-around fixes the problem: I am claiming a $1 RMD requirement for account B and reducing account A's by $1. Therefore, my RMD requirement is correct and my RMD withdrawals are correct.

Nothing about Social Security has changed. It can still be taxable.  There is a new Enhanced Senior Deduction if you are 65 or older.   It is automatic based on your age. It is not part of your Standard Deduction. The new Senior Deduction is separate and in addition to the Standard Deduction or your Itemized Deductions on 1040 line 12e. The 6,000/12,000 senior deduction will be calculated on 1040 Schedule 1-A page 2 Part V Enhanced Deduction for Seniors which goes to 1040 line 13b with any other sch 1-A amounts. Turbo Tax automatically includes it if you qualify. For Single the deduction starts to phase out at 75,000 and maxes out at 175,000 For Joint the deductions starts to phase out at 150,000 and maxes out at 250,000 If you are married you have to file a Joint return And your SSN must be VALID for employment. Do NOT check the box saying Not Valid under My Info.
For Online version You can preview the 1040 or print the whole return https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/accessing/help/how-do-i-preview-my-turbotax-online-return-before-filing/00/26160 What do you have on 1040 or 1040SR line 13b? See the 1040 ….

No, the OBBBA does not say "no tax on Social Security."  Instead, there is an extra deduction for Seniors to partially offset having to pay tax on Social Security.  It does not eliminate the tax on Social Security.   For seniors age 65 and older and who meet the other qualifications for the new Enhanced Senior Deduction, TurboTax automatically fills out Schedule 1-A in the background and then enters the amount of the deduction on the Form 1040, Line 13b.  It is not part of the standard deduction--it is a completely separate deduction on its own line.   If you are "married filing jointly" and both qualify, then you both get the new deduction.  If you are "married filing separately", however, you are not eligible.   Single filers, HOH filers, and qualifying surviving spouse, if they otherwise qualify, are eligible.   You appear to be using Online TurboTax--at least that is what a tag shows underneath your question above.  If you are still preparing your online return, and want to verify that you received that new senior deduction, here's how you can preview the Form 1040 and confirm you are getting the enhanced senior deduction.   If you already printed out a copy of your return, you can view the Form 1040, Line 13b and Schedule 1-A where it was calculated.  If still preparing your return, here's how to preview it:   With your return open go to the left column menu, and click on TAX TOOLS, then subtab TOOLS. In the Tools window choose "View Tax Summary." On that Tax Summary screen you should see that you are getting "Additional Deductions (Schedule 1-A)." Then, while still on that Tax Summary screen,  you can further verify it by going over to the left column menu and under Federal clicking on "Preview my 1040."  That opens up the Form 1040 Worksheet.    Scroll down to Line 13b, and the figure there includes the enhanced senior deduction from the Schedule 1-A. And while you are there, you should see your standard (or itemized) deduction on Line 12e.

Hi, I moved to Hawaii last year from Germany and am filing my taxes as a resident alien. I do still have a job in Germany that I payed taxes for (1,370). I did not file for an exclusion of this income. I have entered the income as foreign income, and the taxes payed under deductions and credits --> foreign tax credits and chose  general category income (it is an income from wages, and the taxes are already paid). I do indicate the taxes paid. and then I receive the message:  Excess Foreign Tax Credit   You have an excess credit that can be carried forward for up to ten years to reduce your taxes. In some cases, you may also need to carry back this credit amount to last year by amending last year's return to claim an additional refund. Learn More   Your General category income tax credit exceeded your allowed credit by $1,370.   For Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) purposes, your General category income tax credit exceeded your allowed credit by $1,370. and when I look at the amount I owe, it hasn't changed, and in the payment overview there is nothing being credited. Does anyone know what the problem might be? Thank you!
I created a new tax file without deleting the old version.   All worked good with the new file and prior year NOL.   Thanks   Sundar
I have the Crypto transaction in PDF file in turbotax tax required format.  I am unable to upload the file.  Need some help how to do this.   Thanks

Check your SSA-1099 . Box 6 is federal tax withheld - normal. There is no place to enter state or tax in that section. It has to ben entered in another area. Maybe you entered state tax in Other Income taxes to make an entry for tax withheld. It requires a state location. You may have clicked on the w2 section and even though you don't have a form there, the program might think you do.    Can you tell us more about when you see the error, what it says, what form it shows, what line?    Maybe looking at your return will show if something is out of place.  To print or view  your forms, including all worksheets: In desktop, switch to Forms Mode.  For online: On the left side, select  Tax Tools Select Print center Select Print, save or preview this year's return If you have not paid, select pay now.

Also, you used the term "amended."   To correct an efile rejection for an original return you do not "amend" the return in the formal sense of that word; i.e., you do not prepare an amended return; you do not click on "Amend.".   You simply open the original return back up and make the changes and resubmit.   Maybe that's what you did, but using the term "amended" can confuse the issue.
When you go to Forms in TurboTax desktop, there is no Form 8606 listed.

@tabithacooper82  Please post the exact rejection error code/message.    There is more than one kind of PIN.   And if it "says" the spouse self-select PIN, then it may actually be the 2024 AGI causing the issue.    Or did it say IP PIN (Identity Protection PIN?)    In any case, if you provide here the rejection error code/message, we can tell you what your next step should be.   Are you married filing jointly?  Also who are you referring to as "spouse?"   Normally the IRS refers to the second-named taxpayer on the return as the Spouse.  Again, the rejection error code/message will help us know which of you is getting the error.

The error message in return review indicates to add three zeros before the six digits listed, but I can't get the program to all an edit to KY form where error is highlighted.
That's my point. I DO have a non-deductible basis. Form 8606 has been included in all my returns for many years.

@Graphite some suggestions   1) you do have a number for September for both the balance and the interest.  Look at your closing / settlement statement.  That interest is deductible.  And the opening balance is the end of September balance.  Just because it wasn't reported by the mortgage service doesn't mean it's not deductible.    2) Since you rented out the 1st home effective November 1, the interest is deductible on Schedule E and not Schedule A.  You are better off that way.  The November and December balance and interest expense should be  ZERO.   And then on Sch E, you can deduct the $3153 and the $3148 (separately, same thing for the property tax - 2 months can go on Sch E).    repost again and let's see what it looks like.  you should be better off because of you can deducft 100% of the $3153 annd the $3148

Here is exactly what you need to include in your mailing envelope, based on the NY Department of Taxation and Finance guidelines. Form IT-201: All pages, in numerical order, signed and dated. Form IT-201-ATT: Only if you are reporting "Other Tax Credits and Taxes" or "Other New York State Taxes." Do NOT mail your actual Federal W-2s. New York requires you to use their "Summary of W-2 Statements." Form IT-2: You must complete this form using the information from your W-2s (the program should have generated this for you.).  NY uses an "Enhanced Form" system with 2D barcodes; their scanners are designed to read Form IT-2, not the various layouts of federal W-2s. Since you are filing Married Filing Separately for New York and your spouse had no NY income, you do not include their W-2 information on your IT-2 or in the envelope.   If you e-filed your federal return and it was accepted, you do not need to include a copy of your Federal Form 1040 with your mailed IT-201.  New York receives your federal data directly from the IRS.   Check your TurboTax printout for these common attachments: Form IT-196: If you chose to take the New York Itemized Deduction instead of the standard deduction. Form IT-225: If you have New York modifications (additions or subtractions) that weren't listed directly on the IT-201. If you claimed specific credits (like the Child and Dependent Care Credit, Earned Income Credit, or Solar Energy Credit), the corresponding form (e.g., IT-215, IT-216) must be attached. If you owe money and didn't pay online, include Form IT-201-V (Payment Voucher) with your check. Note: Do not staple the pages together. Use a paper clip. Staples can interfere with the high-speed scanners.   Mailing Address...   If you are expecting a refund:  STATE PROCESSING CENTER, PO BOX 61000, ALBANY NY 12261-0001 If you are enclosing a payment: STATE PROCESSING CENTER, PO BOX 15555, ALBANY NY 12212-5555
