TurboTax charged me over 9% of my refund—and they still call it “free”? Even 5% would be pushing it, but 9% feels like they’re straight-up robbing literal preschool teachers who work hard for every penny. Last year it was 6%…   And the “free” marketing is wild. Less than half of people even qualify, so why put the word free anywhere? Commercials that say free anywhere along with, only 37% got the free version, are just confusing. Who does that?   Either make it free—make fees very clear this ain’t a free tax service at all. Keep them reasonable! It shouldn’t be more than 5% of what someone gets back, and even that still feels like a ton of free money from people to me, which is sad y’all… i have one w2 that’s it, and they made me fork over hundreds of it. I wonder if any one else had the same increase?

Delete the line item instead.  If TurboTax isn't accepting zero as an entry on Sch E, line 19, other expenses, then remove the expense item entirely.  To do this, you will need to go to the rental income section of TurboTax and edit your other expenses.   Here's a link that explains where to go to enter/change your rental income and expenses: Where do I enter income and expenses from a rental property?

The “senior deduction” is added automatically by the software based on the date of birth and filing status you entered into MY INFO.  You do not need to take any extra steps to enter it. (And…the new senior deduction has nothing to do with whether you are getting Social Security)   The deduction is not on the same line as your standard deduction.  It is shown separately.on line 13b.     2025 STANDARD DEDUCTION AMOUNTS SINGLE $15,750  (65 or older/legally blind + $2000) MARRIED FILING SEPARATELY $15,750  (65 or older/legally blind +1600) MARRIED FILING JOINTLY $31,500  (65 or older/legally blind + $1600) HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD $23,625 (65 or older/legally blind + $2000)     For 2025 through 2028 there is an extra  deduction amount of up to $6000 per individual 65 or older filing Single, MFJ, or HOH which is phased out for taxpayers with modified adjusted gross income over $75,000 for single filers and $150,000 for joint filers.   (The deduction phases out completely at $175.000 Single or HOH, or $250,000 joint)   The $6,000 senior deduction will be calculated on 1040 Schedule 1-A page 2 Part V Enhanced Deduction for Seniors which goes to 1040 line 13b. It is separate and in addition to the Standard Deduction or your Itemized Deductions on 1040 line 12e.  Turbo Tax automatically includes it. IRS Schedule 1-A https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-dft/f1040s1a--dft.pdf   Need to see it? https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-return/preview-turbotax-online-return-filing/L77WCkvnu_US_en_US?uid=m681fkhr   If you are not getting the senior deduction it is because Your date of birth in MY INFO shows that you were not 65 by the end of 2025 Your income is too high You are filing married filing separately

Im trying to file a tax with incomes from both TX and NY in 2025. I uploaded W2 info for both states and did NY state tax (there is no state tax for TX). The Turbotax however keeps recognizing my entire annual income as from NY despite filing partial NY resident form and clarifying NY income source/portion. How to fix this?

@urban1960 , On going over your post, I am assuming the following ( please  confirm and/or edit :(   1. The asset was bought for US$38,000 and held by you and your mother ( NRA)  on a 50-50 basis.  Thus  the basis of your portion of asset US$19,000 2. On the passing of your mother, in 2018 , her basis  of US$19,000 was stepped up to  ( US$19,000 + 93,332 ) US$112,232.    Is this what you meant or am I mis-reading your figures.  See my assumption #1. 3. You are a 1/6the inheritor of your mother's asset  and so your basis  in that 50% is  US$112,232/6 = US$18,705.  Only the decedent's  portion gets a step up and only for US purposes. 4. The sales proceeds distribution  therefore would  be:        (a)  your 50%  gets US$170100 /2 = US$85,050       (b)  your  1/6th  portion gets  (85,050 / 6)   ----->  US$14,175.  Does the  make sense  or what am I missing ?   Also note that TDS is not a good figure to go by --- you should wait till  IT return has been  filed and agreed to -- else you may have to file an amended return.  AS far as I am aware India still allows  a 20% tax  rate with indexation  or 12.5% with no indexation  ( Sitharaman's  last stance )  and most  CAs seem to be going for the 12.5%  without indexation, but your case may be different.   This also means that HTKO may not be applicable and in any case if all your Foreign Source income is  Passive , then moving to general category does not help.   Please respond and I will try and work on this  a bit more .   Namaste ji   pk
Be sure that the Social Security number you used was the first Social Security number on the return if filing jointly. If only one number be sure that you entered it correctly.

If you are seeing"Accepted" in TurboTax, that is an efile term which means that within 24-48 hours after efiling, your return was accepted for processing by the IRS (or state). The IRS does not use the term "accepted" in the IRS refund lookup tool.   The IRS tool has 3 stages: Return received and is being processed Refund approved Refund sent and an expected deposit date   If the status in TurboTax says "accepted", it will always say that.  It doesn't change since it's just the efile status.

To report a QCD in the in TurboTax:   After entering the 1099-R details, there are a series of screens with questions about the distribution.  You need to go through all the screens/questions. Do not exit the 1099-R entry section before answering all the questions. When asked "Did you transfer all or part of this money directly to charity?", select Yes. Enter the exact amount of the distribution that was transferred directly to the charity. TurboTax will report the full distribution on Form 1040, Line 4a, but will not include the QCD portion in the taxable amount on Line 4b. Here are the requirements for making QCDs: You must be 70½ or older to be eligible to make a QCD. QCDs are limited to the amount that would otherwise be taxed as ordinary income. This excludes non-deductible contributions. The maximum annual amount that can qualify for a QCD is $100,000. This applies to the sum of QCDs made to one or more charities in a calendar year. (If, however, you file taxes jointly, your spouse can also make a QCD from his or her own IRA within the same tax year for up to $100,000.) For a QCD to count towards your current year's RMD, the funds must come out of your IRA by your RMD deadline, generally December 31. Any amount donated above your RMD does not count toward satisfying a future year's RMD. Funds distributed directly to you, the IRA owner, and which you then give to charity do not qualify as a QCD.
