The question (which you can't answer, I guess) is whether the interview would work if you had a 1099 first.  I'm trying to have it looked into.

Once your return is filed, TurboTax has no control over the processing or the timing when the IRS releases your refund.    Your refund could be offset. The IRS and State Governments have the ability to offset a refund to pay for certain past due debts.  You generally will receive a letter stating what the offset was for.    The IRS provides a toll-free number, (800) 304-3107, to call for information about tax offsets.   Here are a few FAQs to help you track your refund: When will I get my federal tax refund? How do I track my state refund? Why does Where's My Refund say "approved" but TurboTax still says "accepted"? Why do some refunds take longer than others? What if my IRS refund is taking longer than 21 days?

To print your NY state return, follow the next steps:   Once you log in to your account, go to the Tax Tools, and then select Print Center. Go to the File section to select a filing method, and choose to file only the state return. Choose the option to print, save, or preview this year's return. Print for mailing. Then, sign and mail the return yourself.  For further instructions, see the link below:  How do I file my return by mail?

@BillM223    Your solution caused me to dig a little deeper.  I ended up doing the following:   1. Adjusted 8615 worksheet, line 2b to include the HSA amount(instead of overriding the form 8615) 2. Overrode standard deduction worksheet to add back in HSA withdrawal - line 1 (w2 + 450 + HSA) This yielded the result I was expecting and also passed the final check within TurboTax.  I also ran this by my CPA and he seemed to agree with the result.   Thanks again for all your help.

I have a test case which acts in a somewhat similar way, with the caveat that California is a complex state return, what is happening on your return may not be at all what my test shows.   OK, which version of the TurboTax software are you using: TurboTax Online or TurboTax Desktop?   On your W-2, do you have any CA state income (box 16 with a box 15 code of CA)? I want to understand how you are entering an CA income.

Someone else said that Uber drivers can request a 1099-K even if it is not mandatory.  (But I don't if they will send you a late 2025 document now.)  Uber also seems to know that you can't claim the deduction without a 1099, read their page carefully. https://help.uber.com/en/driving-and-delivering/article/get-tax-forms-from-uber?nodeId=084856a7-da35-49b7-8e79-f7eaf6daa42f   You can also self-report tips on form 4137. The problem here is that form is designed for tipped workers who did not report their tips to their employer.  I don't know if that form can be used with self-employment.   This Turbotax article also has, I believe, incorrect information that you can deduct tips from self-employment without a 1099.  I have flagged it for review.  Note that the people who write the articles are not the same tax experts who verify the programming.  The programming must be verified in accordance with IRS regulations, and the IRS will not accept any return that doesn't match all the regulations.  So if there is no procedure in the program, I would take that over the article.  Sometimes the IRS issues exceptions but I have not seen an exception for this issue.  https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tips/tax-deductions-and-credits/no-tax-on-tips-how-it-works-in-the-one-big-beautiful-bill/c1thHf1sU   As a practical matter, if you don't have a 1099-K, then whatever you report as Uber income is entirely on the honor system.  If your gross income was $10,000 and $1,000 was tips, there is very little chance the IRS would audit you if you self-reported $9,000 of gross income, which would achieve the same result.  However, if they audited you, your Uber records would clearly show what you did, and you would owe back taxes and possibly interest and penalties of about 1% per month of the underpaid taxes.

If they have total income in 2025 of $5,200 or more you cannot claim them as dependents under the Qualifying Relative rules.   To be a Qualifying Relative - 1. The person cannot be your qualifying child or the qualifying child of any other taxpayer. A child is not the qualifying child of any other taxpayer if the child's parent (or any other person for whom the child is defined as a qualifying child) is not required to file an income tax return or files an income tax return only to get a refund on income tax withheld. 2. The person either (a) must be related to you or (b) must live with you all year as a member of your household. 3. The person's gross income for the year must be less than $5,200 (social security does not count) in 2025 4. You must provide more than half of the person's total support for the year. 5. The person must be a U.S. citizen or a U.S., Canada, or Mexico resident for some part of the year. 6. The person must not file a joint return with their spouse with the following exception - You can claim a person as a dependent who files a joint return if that person and that person’s spouse file the joint return only to claim a refund of income tax withheld or estimated tax paid.

The IRS uses your prior year AGI to combat fraud. Make sure you take into account the information below.   You can find your 2024 Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) by: Looking at line 11 on page 1 of your 2024 Form 1040 Requesting a transcript of your 2024 tax return from the IRS. You can request your transcript online at the following link: Get Transcript Please click on this TurboTax article for more information.    Check these items as well to ensure you have the correct number.  If you:  Filed late last year after mid-November or your return was processed after that time—try entering 0. Amended your return last year—make sure you’re using the AGI from your original return, not the amended one. (If you only have a 1040X form, it’s on line 1, column A). Rounded your AGI to the nearest dollar—be sure to round up when it’s 50 cents or more and down when it’s 49 cents or less. Filed with your spouse last year—you and your spouse have the same 2024 AGI. (Don’t split the AGI amount or enter  0  for one of you).   Time-saving Tip: If what you entered is correct and you continue to get a reject, you won't be able to e-file. There's probably a data mismatch at the government, or some other situation beyond your control that prevents your return from being e-filed. In this case, your only option would be to print and mail in your return.    This article will give you instruction on how to print and mail your return.

Once your return is filed, TurboTax has no control over the processing or the timing when the IRS releases your refund.    The IRS states that most federal tax refunds are issued within 21 days of acceptance, however, some may take longer if they require additional review. Also, by law, the IRS cannot issue EITC or ACTC refunds before mid-February. This applies to your entire refund, not just the portion related to those specific credits.   Here are a few FAQs to help you track your refund: When will I get my federal tax refund? How do I track my state refund? Why does Where's My Refund say "approved" but TurboTax still says "accepted"? Why do some refunds take longer than others? 1099-b shows unknown in the cost basis column.  I have the cost basis.  When I follow the instructions for correcting the cost basis in Turbotax the amount appears in the "adjustment" column and the amount in the gain/loss column increases by the amount of the adjustment.  I would expect a decrease.  When I put in a "-" sign in front of the adjustment amount the calculation of gain/loss looks correct.  Should I put a negative amount in the "Total adjustments to gain (or loss)" box?

Everyone's tax situation is different and the complexity of your tax situation, meaning the forms needed to file your return, determines if you qualify for the TurboTax Free Edition.   The TurboTax Free Edition is strictly limited to simple Form 1040 returns. If your return requires additional schedules to report specific types of income or to claim certain credits, the system will prompt you to upgrade to TurboTax Deluxe or higher.   Here are the most common reasons you would be required to upgrade to a paid version: Unemployment Income: If you received a 1099-G for unemployment benefits, this is no longer covered under the Free Edition for the 2025 tax year. Itemized Deductions: If you are claiming deductions for mortgage interest, property taxes, or large charitable contributions on Schedule A instead of taking the standard deduction. Investment Income: Reporting stock sales, cryptocurrency transactions, or rental property income. Self-Employment/Gig Work: If you have 1099-NEC or 1099-K income and need to deduct business expenses on Schedule C. Education Credits: Claiming the American Opportunity Tax Credit or Lifetime Learning Credit (Form 8863). To see if you have forms that are not included in the free edition: Sign in to your TurboTax Online account. Select Tax Tools from the left menu and then click Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Look for Schedules 1, 2, or 3. If any of these are present (other than for the Student Loan Interest deduction or the EITC/Child Tax Credit), an upgrade is required. If you want to start over to remove an accidental entry:  Select Tax Tools  Clear and Start Over  This will erase all data entered so far Student Loan Interest (Form 1098-E) is technically an "Adjustment to Income" (an Above-the-Line deduction). While it is a common and simple form, TurboTax's commercial "Free Edition" is restricted to Form 1040 only with no additional schedules.   Even though you are taking the Standard Deduction, Student Loan Interest is reported on Schedule 1. As soon as the software detects a need for Schedule 1 (for student loans, unemployment, or self-employment), it triggers an upgrade to Deluxe.   As long as you haven't done the upgrade, you can go back to the question, "Did you pay student loan interest?", and say no, you will not need Schedule 1. The software won't prompt you to upgrade—but you will lose that deduction.
