Just to follow up on my original post and respond to all the replies, I had tried running Windows 10 on my Ubuntu system via VirtualBox, and managed to finish TT for tax year 2024, but my system was bogged down, since it was running on a ca 2013 Mac desktop computer.   For tax year 2025 and beyond, I bought a new Windows 11 desktop computer and set it up to dual boot Win 11 and Ubuntu. The Win 11 partition is relatively small since I don't anticipate having much use for it other than running TT once a year. I also created a very small shared partition so I could transfer tax data between operating systems.

To enter your direct Qualified Charitable Deduction that's reported on your 1099-R, follow the steps below:   Select Federal Select Wages & Income Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security Select Start by IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R) Add your 1099-R. Refer to the TurboTax Help article  Where do I enter my 1099-R? for more details.   TurboTax will ask you a series of questions regarding your distribution after you enter your 1099-R.   Select I transferred all or part of this money directly to charity on the Do any of these situations apply to you? Screen. Enter the amount that was transferred directly to charity when you get to that screen.   You will get a screen that tells you the amount of your retirement distribution that is designated as a nontaxable Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD).   The full amount of the distribution that's reported on your Form 1099-R will be on line 4a (IRA Distributions) of your Form 1040 or 1040-SR. The taxable amount reported on Line 4b will be the total distribution less the QCD amount and will have "QCD" entered next to it.   Refer to the TurboTax Help article What is a Qualified Charitable Distribution? for more information.

In January 2025, I moved from WV to AZ. My job is done remotely. I paid taxes for most of 2025 before being laid off. My company NEVER switched me over to paying AZ taxes, despite me opening a ticket every single week. I paid WV taxes the entire time. I was later laid off, and received unemployment. I believe i put down my WV income as 0 for every field, and have the full amount listed as AZ? Or just the one single paycheck i received still in WV, and the rest as AZ? I would then be a part time resident of WV and full time AZ? I did not have taxes taken out of my unemployment.

@joebob8000    Are you getting either the AOC or LLC credit.  Look in the student worksheet form and see what is being applied in line 18 towards credits.  This should only be 4k if you are receiving the full AOC credit or 10k if receiving the LLC in full.  It gets complicated what the number should be there if your potentially being phased out on the credit.  I bet your entire 1098qt amount is listed in that line 18 when possibly only some of it should be, or none of it if your not eligible for either of the credits.  The result is that some of your expenses are not being allocated correctly between the credits and the 1099q income.

I realize that if all my 1099-Q distributions are for qualified education expenses than its a wash and I guess i don't need to enter it into TurboTax (desktop premier), however, that just doesn't seem right.  And if someone wasn't paying attention, they could get burned on this.   Why does the interview not understand that the total expenses matches the total distributions.  I am entering values in the room and board and books and computer categories, but if i look at 1040 line 8 I see additional income and the Schedule 1 I see a portion of my distribution as taxable.  Looking at the QTP computation of taxable distribution, it looks like it is reporting exactly a 10,000 excess distribution, but none of my numbers align with the qualified or excess numbers.     Should i just override the values in the form?   I'd rather have the tax software I paid for work correctly and accurately.
