This doesn't work. When I try to open the tax file on a new computer, it says that the return only contains federal data (which is a lie), and that TurboTax needs to download the state parts. Since I am filing in two states, I need two states, and TT wants me to pay AGAIN for the second state.

My son and his girlfriend live together but are not married.  They have a son together. The TT program will allow me to put their son on both of their tax forms and claim him as a dependent for one and a non-dependent for the other. My question is, is this allowable?  All my research has said that only one of them is allowed to claim their son on their tax form and the other has to leave him off.  Which is the correct way? Please help!

Yes, you should answer yes.    TurboTax is asking this to track your basis (the after-tax money you might have already paid) and to ensure you aren't double-taxed it when you withdraw it, or to see if you're still within the five-year waiting period for tax-free withdrawals of converted funds. Since you’ve done conversions, clicking "Yes" will trigger the follow-up questions you need to answer.

Your return is being rejected by the IRS.   You received an email that we cannot see that tells you why your tax return was rejected.   Some rejected returns can be fixed and re-filed.  Some have “un-fixable” reasons for the rejection and have to be mailed instead.    What is the rejection code or rejection message?     If it was rejected for AGI—-your 2024 AGI might not be in the IRS system if you filed late.   Try using zero instead.   If filing with zero is rejected then file again but select the option that you did not file last year.  The IRS does not see that question and it will allow you to e-file with no AGI question.     https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/agi/help/where-do-i-correct-my-agi-in-turbotax-online/00/26311   If that does not work and you still cannot e-file, then print, sign, and mail your tax return.

Retirement income is source to the recipient's resident state, so it would be Oregon income.  You will report on your Oregon state income tax return only.   4 U.S. Code § 114 is often called the "Pension Source Act." It specifically prevents a state from reaching across its borders to tax the retirement income of people who have moved away. Even if you earned that pension or 401(k) while working in a high-tax state like California or New York, once you establish residency in a new state (like Florida or Texas), the old state is federally prohibited from taxing those distributions.

I am having trouble with the Turbotax questions being asked in a not-very-precise way. Here's my next question regarding this TT question:   Roth IRAs Did you convert a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA before 2025? Yes or No   I have not ever converted a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA before 2025. I HAVE converted PORTIONS--several times-- of a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA before 2025.    Do I answer yes?

If you do not have any 199A information to enter, Box Z should not be checked.   The issuer technically should not have given you a K-1, with no Box 20 detail (even $0 if for example you have a small share and the 199A was small). So, if you think there is a statement missing, I'd suggest reaching out to the issuer before proceeding to ensure you don't miss out on any deductions.

Federal and state refunds come from completely separate entities.  There is no rule as to which one will come in first or how long it will be between their arrival in your account.   TurboTax gives you an estimated date for receiving your refund based on a 21 day average from your date of acceptance, but it can take longer.  “21 days”  is not a promise from TurboTax or the IRS.      First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:  https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/   Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control.  TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.     You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount  (line 35a of your 2025 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:    https://www.irs.gov/refunds   To track your state refund:     https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-refund/track-state-refund/L3jgO8PGs_US_en_US?uid=lt447ebr   If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, that will take some extra time, while the third party bank handles the refund processing     https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-refund/refunds-take-longer-others/L14YlqFrH_US_en_US?uid=lexdr7zh . https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-refund/irs-refund-taking-longer-21-days/L2vRAJbdU_US_en_US?uid=lexe7lst         If you are getting earned income credit on line 27 or additional child tax credit on line 28 You are subject to the delay required by the PATH act.  Do not expect your refund before early March   https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/internal-revenue-service/federal-refunds-delayed-due-path-act/L5jnQJsBi_US_en_US   Note:  “Accepted” is not the same as “approved”.  TurboTax tells you the e-file was accepted if the IRS deems that there is enough information on the return for them to take it in for processing.   Only the IRS can approve of the refund, which is a later stage of processing.  If the IRS approves your refund they will provide a date for the refund to be issued.   FROM THE IRS WHERE’S MY REFUND SITE: https://www.irs.gov/wheres-my-refund How it works Where's My Refund shows your refund status: Return Received – We received your return and are processing it. Refund Approved – We approved your refund and are preparing to issue it by the date shown. Refund Sent – We sent the refund to your bank or to you in the mail. It may take 5 days for it to show in your bank account or several weeks for your check to arrive in the mail.

Wait until your original return has been fully processed before you amend, and make sure you have saved a pdf of the original return before you amend. (If you do not save it as a pdf, the amended return will overwrite the original, and the original will be lost forever)     See this TurboTax support FAQ for amending a tax return -   CURRENT YEAR https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-return/amend-federal-tax-return-current-year/L7eS6o1qh_US_en_US?uid=lfunevhk   Do not expect quick results from amending. It can take four months or more for the IRS to process an amended return.     You can watch for information here: https://www.irs.gov/filing/wheres-my-amended-return
