Thank you.  I think the issue will be that I need to purchase the second license (with a different email account) in order to e file the 6th return (IRS limits to 5 per individual license).  So I will want to eventually move one of them from my regular map to the second computer (which happens to be a PC) and set up / purchase a second  desktop SW (which I don't love but am OK with) to complete and file the last return.  I know I will have to transfer the return-in-process with a USB stick.  So I will try that.
I signed into to www.irs.gov/getanippin to verify my IP PIN.  There was some sort of glitch or error on the original IP PIN on the IRS end and they revised my IP PIN!

No, not exactly.  The program pulls the Federal data into the New York section, but you still have to start and file the state amendment separately (file Form IT-201-X Amended Resident Income Tax Return).   Add the 1099-R to your Federal return, and continue through the Federal section until done. Select the State Taxes tab, and Click on "Your State Returns." Click "Edit" (or "Update") next to New York. Look for a section titled "Other Tax Situations" or "Additional Tax Situations", and Select "Amend a Previously Filed Return." Verify that the 1099-R has flowed from the Federal return to the New York return.  Make sure that  any state-specific pension exclusions (e.g., the NYS $20,000 retirement exclusion) are applied correctly to the new 1099-R. Note: New York State law requires you to file an amended state return within 90 days of amending your Federal return if the change affects your taxable income.   If the program doesn't give you an e-file option for the amended state return (IT-201-X), send it to the address listed on the printed instructions.   If you DO mail the return, include a copy of the new 1099-R and a copy of your Federal 1040-X.   And finally... wait until the IRS has accepted your Federal amendment before you mail or e-file the New York amended return (just in case the IRS makes further adjustments to your 1099-R entry).

From the information you provided, you are not doing anything wrong. To complete the backdoor Roth reporting correctly, you must complete two separate sections (income and deductions). If you have deleted the non-deductible contribution, but still included the 1099-R for the income that was created when you moved money out of the traditional account, it is expected that there will be tax because there is no offsetting non-deductible contribution.    To check if the Roth conversion worked as it should, here is how you can check: go to Tax Tools on the left of your screen, choose Tools, then View Tax Summary. On the left of the screen, select Preview my 1040, and check that line 4a show the full distribution and line 4b is either $0 or a small amount if you had earnings in excess of your contribution.   To review the steps in full to create a backdoor Roth conversion, here is a reference: How do I enter a backdoor Roth IRA conversion?

A disappointing outcome. I'm hoping someone has a better answer in my case. Thanks for responding.

Update:  I was able to import part of my M Lynch financial data after reducing the number of files in import request.  This appears to be an issue with size of file or transactions.  In attempt to get all my ML data into TT, I tried importing my data in several batches (say 3-4 of 4 to 5 files per batch).  The problem, however with this is once you import files from M Lynch, any succesive imports will cause TT to erase the data earlier imported.
