The IRS has been known to issue refunds through paper check this year. It's unclear what makes the decision when they send notice for bank deposit information.  To be prepared, should you be one where a notice is received, here are the details.   The CP53E  is an IRS notice that informs you that your tax refund is frozen   because your return does not include a valid direct deposit Bank on your 2025 Form 1040.    When you receive the CP53E notice, you have 30 days to update or add a new bank account. Access or establish your IRS online account by visiting Your Account to add or update your bank account information. You cannot change the tax year.   The current online program is for 2025 only.   Only a 2025 return can be prepared online and only a 2025 return can be e-filed.   Online preparation and e-filing for 2022, 2023, and  2024 is permanently closed. Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.   To file a return for a prior tax year  If you need to prepare a return for 2022, 2023, or 2024  you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s) https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/ You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.   Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.   https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/state-taxes/contact-state-department-revenue/L9qVToi02_US_en_US?uid=m6e06um0     When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.   Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

When you begin amending your return, you will see the original return, the refund calculator will start new at $0 and will only reflect the changes in the refund or tax due. The state showing $0 could also mean that the changes you made on your return have not caused a change to your state return.     You should not amend your return before your original return is processed, it will cause delays in refunds.  Sometimes the IRS or state will not process the return before the original return is processes.     Does amending my return affect my refund? Can I e-file my amended state return? How do I amend my state tax return?

I’m experiencing the same issue. All of my information matches what’s on the CRA website, but I’m still unable to file.   I’ve also been using TurboTax for years and rolled forward my information from last year’s return, as nothing has changed. Despite this, I’m encountering an N1 error. It seems there are some issued with TurboTax!

Federal and state refunds come from completely separate entities,  There is no rule as to which one will come first or how much time there will be between their arrivals.  Some states process returns quickly and some are very slow.   STATE RETURN Make sure your state return was accepted:  https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/   To track your state refund:       ttps://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-refund/track-state-refund/L3jgO8PGs_US_en_US?uid=lt447ebr https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/state-taxes/contact-state-department-revenue/L9qVToi02_US_en_US?uid=m6e06um0

Well, this is not going to be very helpful to anyone else, but I did want to follow back up from my prior post a couple of hours ago. After I posted that message, I ended up just shutting down the laptop and went off doing other things around the house for awhile, then around 10 minutes ago decided to boot back up and give it another try, just to see.   This time, launching the TurboTax 2025 software presented me with the same login prompt on the path to activation, but after I entered my email address, this time it did not prompt me with a captcha. It gave me the option to enter my intuit.com account password or send a code to my phone; I opted to have a code sent to my phone, which immediately came in. I entered the code, and then it wanted to send me another code (again, just to make sure it's me) to my email account. That code came in, I entered it, and then it prompted me to change my password (mind you, I had just changed my password a few hours ago, and changing it via the TurboTax 2025 software only asked me to enter the password ONCE, not twice to confirm I typed it correctly like usual, not sure what's up with that), but after that, I was able to enter my activation code and now it is operating as expected. Still a pretty daunting login process though.   I've no idea what changed between now and a couple of hours ago, in all honesty; could be any number of things I suppose. Maybe all of my captcha attempts locked my account in some way and I needed to wait until the lock expired; not really sure. I'm just glad it is over (for now, anyway). We will see what happens when we go to actually do our taxes.... good luck, everyone.

You are correct. You do not need to file an amended California return if there was no change to your state tax liability or refund.    You are also correct that you do not need to send Worksheets to the IRS.    Here is what you will need to mail as part of your amendment:   Form 1040-X, signed and dated Form 1040, pages 1 & 2, showing the updated Lines 5a and 5b, with "Amended" written at the top Form 1099-R   Send the above via certified mail since this is your proof that you filed the correction.

The issue is for people like me who have a lot of crypto transactions where I did not receive any forms whatsoever. I used a lot of decentralized exchanges and they don't issue any forms or summary statements. When TT allowed csv imports I could handle this easily - but now that they disabled them in the TT desktop version and made it harder to use with the online version, it makes it difficult to handle. Luckily with the help of others I found this worksround.

Thanks for your reply, it was informative though it did not resolve my issue.  I verified the 1099-R was entered correctly in the federal income section and rechecked the federal return. Then went to the NJ return, checked Yes for first year withdrawal completed the section and rechecked the NJ return. The software is still populating lines 4a and 4b with a zero and flagging it as an error. The worksheet instructions say to complete either 4a or 4b; in my situation, 4a should be entered. I see no way to clear 4b. Again, this is a Pensions, Annuities and IRA Withdrawal worksheet; line 4a ‘First year of withdrawal from IRA Enter the total of IRA contributions previously taxed’

Okay I got it working. Had to use the times new roman font everywhere for all fields and I increased the size to 12. All of the letters must be uppercase.  Once I did this TT reads in everything correctly and recognizes all the letters. Don't have to edit any transactions afterwards. Thanks for your help and I hope others find this useful.

@ nsha  and @ mstsuzanne      For future reference, IMO it's faster and easier to file an extension request and payment at either the IRS Direct Pay website or from inside your online IRS account.  Those methods are also available sooner each year than in TurboTax.   If using IRS Direct Pay, in the form there select "1040 Income tax".  When it asks the "reason for payment," choose "extension" and choose the correct tax year the payment is for. It will then ask for some bits of info from a previous tax return (you choose the year)  to verify your identity.  You can pay directly out of your bank account for free.  There is a service charge if you use debit/credit card.   Be especially aware of any fee for credit card, which can be kinda hefty if your payment is large.   Print out the confirmation when you finish and save in your records.     https://www.irs.gov/payments   Or you should be able to make the extension request and payment inside your online IRS account (if you have one) in the Payments section.   Again, there is a form to indicate the "reason" for the payment, so choose "extension."   For the sake of completeness, if someone has a Treasury EFTPS account, it can be used to make an extension request and payment.

I am claiming mortgage interest deduction on Schedule A.  For certain reasons, I am NOT claiming any property tax or state income or sales tax deduction.  When doing this, the AMT form (6251), on line 2a, substitutes the standard deduction value, even though instructions say to use the value from Schedule A, line 7, if you are filing Schedule A, which I am.  But it appears line 2a populates from Schedule A, line 5a.  In any case, when I look at Schedule A, line 5a as well as line 7, they are both blank, not '0', and in that case 6251, line 2a populates with the standard deduction value.  If I enter '0' on line 5a or override line 7 with a '0', everything populates correctly.  But when it first used the standard deduction, my AMT tax on 6251, line 11 jumps sky high!  Which is related to adding back the standard deduction value to my AMT income on line 2a, instead of 0 from Schedule A, line 7.

Sounds like you've got it figured out. Entering a higher cost basis is tempting but remember that the IRS still has your 1099-R (or maybe not). Ref: Form 8960 vs. the 8960 Worksheet: For my 2025 Premier desktop version, my directions are still valid. Do either of the following work for you? I suspect you weren't able to enter the NITT on the Worksheet was because one has to Right Click and select Override on Line 5b. Alternatively, Double Click on line 5b in Form 8960 immediately opens the Worksheet. On Line 5b of the Worksheet, Right Click and select Override and enter the NITT. Once entered, Form 8960 shows the subtraction for the NITT. Before I discovered the Worksheet, trying to Override line 5b on 8960 caused an error when doing the review. Regards

We just tried to do this and it’s not even possible to delete the file. It’s asking for our state/local ID on the crossover but everything is blanked out, it won’t allow us to type on the file. No we are not using Internet Explorer, we’ve tried it on different devices, and cleared the cache/cookies. I’m on the phone with a representative and all I hear is construction. Is there a real answer to this?
