You will request a regular distribution without earnings since you are past the due date of the 2024 return.    1. If you didn't pay the 6% penalty on your 2024 return then you will need to amend it to enter the Roth IRA contribution. Then TurboTax will automatically calculate the 6% penalty. No, you do not need to add Form 1099-R with code PJ this is only if you remove the excess before the due date of the return.   2. You do not need to wait until the 2024 amened return is processed, you can file the 2025 return now. You will need to pay the 6% penalty on your 2025 return. Please see these steps:   Click on "Search" on the top right and type “IRA contributions” Click on “Jump to IRA contributions" Select “Roth IRA” On the "Did you contribute more to a Roth IRA than was allowed in 2024 or any previous year?" answer "Yes" On the "Enter your excess Roth IRA contributions made in 2024 or prior years" screen enter the total excess contribution from 2024 (if it wasn't carried over).   3. Yes, you will get a 2026 Form 1099-R with code J (assuming you are under 59 1/2) in 2027 and once you enter this into your 2026 return the excess contribution will be resolved. Please make sure that you included the excess contribution amount when TurboTax asks you in the 1099-R follow-up questions about the prior year Roth IRA contributions.

Note: For tax years beginning on or after January 1, 2017, the Illinois Property Tax Credit is not allowed if the taxpayer’s adjusted gross income for the taxable year exceeds $500,000 for returns with a federal filing status of married filing jointly, or $250,000 for all other returns. It's all or nothing line 1 of Illinois 1040 $500,000 (MFJ), you get it; $500,001 you get nothing.  see ILL PUB 108 https://tax.illinois.gov/research/publications/pubs/illinois-property-tax-credit.html

Yes. If you are filing Married Filing Jointly (MFJ) for your Federal return and want to file Married Filing Separately (MFS) for Massachusetts, you will need to create mock Federal returns as MFS for you and your spouse so that your individual tax information will properly flow to the MA returns.   Here is a TurboTax article that explains how to file a federal return MFJ and state returns MFS. Note that it is suggested that you do this in TurboTax Desktop.

In the print settings menu, if you switch from "All official forms required for filing" to the option below, "Forms to review or keep for your records," does the watermark still appear on the printout? If not, you should be able to print this version, compare it to the print package with the watermark in option 1 for completeness, and mail it to the Virginia DOT.    If you are unable to find a print option to remove the watermark, it may be acceptable to print and mail the watermarked copy to the state.    Note: you may need to manually check the amended return checkbox at the top, as this is a requirement for VA DOT processing of an amended Form 502.

i am having same issue, 2, 18 year olds and a 19 YO dependent college student I have deleted and reentered their info several times. $500 credit won't show up. Also having issue with 529 withdrawals- being handled very poorly had to input 3 times. This 2025 desktop version is terrible. I am ready to file- but what do i do now? can it be fixed manually in the schedules?

I have my own HSA and HDHP, but I am being claimed as a dependent on my parent's tax return as I still live at home. I got this plan in September with a new job, so I marked Sep-Dec as self-only on form 8889, and the previous months as none. I am not trying to claim a credit as I am ineligible, but when I do the final check, it says I am ineligible and to check a different option than self-only for which months I had it. I am not sure what to do about it.
I did not want the priemium service! I thought I was paying only $70. How can we correct this ASAP!

The item on your W-2 labeled "CAFE" is likely referring to a Cafeteria Plan.    Cafeteria plans, covered under section 125 of the Internal Revenue Code, allow employees to set aside pre-tax income for certain employer-offered benefits, such as adoption assistance, dependent care assistance, accident and health insurance, and group term life insurance policies.   Cafe 125 amounts should already have been subtracted from the total amount of wages reported in box 1 on your W-2. Contact your employer with any questions.   See this TurboTax tips article for more information about cafeteria plans.   @user17723006828

If you transferred your 2024 return into 2025, on the Income/Deductions topic pages, you should see your 2024 amounts next to your 2025 amounts.  TurboTax prompts with 'Needs Review' for any topics you haven't visited in 2025 that appeared on your 2024 return.  You'll also see a comparison between years in the Review section.    You can compare PDFs for each year side by side for more detail.   @dave4carter
Thank you. I just checked and verified the additional $12,000 exemption/deduction. Is that only this year? Or on-going (depending)? DaveR

To amend your return:    Sign in to TurboTax On the home screen, scroll down to Your tax returns & documents and  select the year you want to amend Select Amend (change) return Continue through the screens, make the changes you need to make, and carefully answer the remaining questions to finish amending your return To enter the energy credit:   Go to the Deductions & Credits tab Under Home Energy Credits go to Your Home  Start/Revisit next to Home Energy Credits Follow the prompts Where do I enter qualified energy-saving improvements?

If your plan is a 401(a), you should not check the box that says "Yes, this is a 403(b) plan."    If you do, you are effectively telling the software, "I have a Tax-Sheltered Annuity," which triggers the confusing questions about annuity start dates and cost basis.   Follow these steps to bypass the annuity loop:   On the 1099-R entry screen, make sure Box 7 matches your form (likely Code 7 or Code 1) Ensure the "IRA/SEP/SIMPLE" box is unchecked (since it's a 401a, not an IRA) When the software asks, "Was this distribution from a 403(b) plan?", select "No, it's another type of qualified retirement plan" By selecting No, the software should treat it like a standard pension or 401k distribution and skip the "Annuity" questions entirely

Please define what you mean by 'mixed use' property.  If you converted the property from personal use only to rental use only OR from rental use only to personal use only during the year, then you need to change the number of days of personal use that you have entered.     Personal use days are only considered when your property is a rental property, but you use it personally during the time it is also being advertised and available to rent.  This situation is the most common with a vacation rental property that is used for a certain number of days by the owner in between renters.   If you converted it during the year, then your personal use days should be zero and the rental days the number of days it was rented.  Then, you would prorate the expenses yourself and only claim the expenses that were incurred during the time it was a rental property.  Personal expenses such as mortgage interest and property tax would also be prorated and you would claim the personal portion on Schedule A, with the rental portion claimed on Schedule E.   @carlRcraw

This is more of a complaint. I bought the Deluxe federal and state edition from Costco, and when I installed it, it prompted me to use online for $0 extra. I had been thinking about using online to avoid storing things on my pc, but couldn't justify the extra cost. So when I was offered to use online for no extra cost, I went with it. Everything was going well until I got to the state part (California). Instead of not charging me anything other than the e-filing fee, it now wants an additional $59. That is more than I paid for the package at Costco. This was a bait and switch, and I'm pretty angry. My choices seem to be doing my taxes all over again on desktop, so I don't have to pay extra, or just sucking it up and paying the hidden fee.

The RMD calculation is based on information that is entered into TurboTax and not on your actual bank or brokerage records, so this can be resolved easily by following these steps:   First, we will delete the original Form 1099-R entry:   Go to Wages & Income Select Review to the right of IRA, 401(k), and pension plan withdrawals Click on the trash can to the right of your Form 1099-R, which will delete the Form Before you add it back in, click on Deductions & credits on the left panel to allow the system to refresh Now, click back on Wages & Income to return to input the Form 1099-R information again:   Go to Wages & Income on the left panel within your TurboTax account Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security and click on the down arrow to the right Click Start to the right of IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R) Click the Yes box when you see, "Did you get a 1099-R...?" Click the "Enter a different way" box Click the "Type it in myself" box Click on the box that pertains to your type of 1099-R (typically the first box), Continue Next, you will see, "Enter your 1099-R provider's info", complete that, then Continue Next, you will see "Enter your 1099-R details from _". Enter the information from the original Form 1099-R that you received Ensure the details from your Form 1099-R are correct checking for which Distribution Code was used in Box 7 (or review if imported), then Continue Continue through until you reach, "Let's get more information about your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD)", enter your RMD due by December 31 Next, you are asked, "How much of this distribution applied to your December 31 RMD?" If you select "Some", you will need to enter the amount of the distribution that applied to your RMD* You will reach "Review your 1099-R summary", press Continue (not the pencil) and additional questions will generate for you to answer When you reach "Let's go over any required minimum distributions (RMD)", Continue (not the pencil)   The above steps should resolve the incorrect penalty calculation.   *Note: If you did not take all of your RMD and are expecting a penalty, just not the amount calculated, then the interview questions will guide you through the additional questions so that TurboTax can then calculate the correct penalty amount and generate Form 5329.
