Room and board do qualify as higher education expenses for 529 plans, provided the student is enrolled at least half-time. I have listed the steps to get to these screens to check your entries in TurboTax below. Qualified expenses are entered under "Deductions & Credits", "Education," "ESA and 529 Distributions." You can get to Education Expenses screen in TurboTax to verify your entries as follows: Click on "Search" at the top right of your TurboTax screen. Type "Education Expenses" into the search box. Click on the link "Jump to Education Expenses" Your screen will ask, "Did you have education expenses?" Select "Yes" and "Continue" Follow through the TurboTax screens and enter your information regarding your education expenses Make sure all follow-up questions are answered properly. 529-plan distributions (reported on Form 1099-Q) are not taxable if used for qualified education expenses, such as tuition, fees, books, and room/board. Form 1099-Q is an information form. You can choose to not report the Form 1099-Q on your tax return, if your son has sufficient educational expenses, including room & board (even if he lives at home) to cover the distribution. If you have already entered it, make sure you indicate the funds were used for qualified expenses to avoid taxation. Make sure you have properly entered all of your qualified education expenses in TurboTax and check all of your entries. You can get to the Form 1099-Q screens in TurboTax to check your entries as follows: Click on "Search" at the top right of your TurboTax screen. Type "529" into the search box. Click on the link "Jump to 529" Your screen will ask if you received a Form 1099-Q for qualified tuition program distributions in 2025. Follow through the TurboTax screens and enter your information regarding your distributions. Make sure all follow-up questions are answered properly. Click here for 529 Plans and Taxes: Deductions, Tax-Free Withdrawals & More Click here for Guide to IRS Form 1099-Q: Payments from Qualified Education Programs Please return to Community if you have any additional information or questions and we would be happy to help.

If accepted, there is nothing you can do at present. However, the IRS will check to see if its database is showing you made estimated tax payments and should make the appropriate adjustment. Worst case, for some reason, they don't show up, then you'll need to amend once your return is fully processed. You probably need to supply supporting documents (bank, credit card statements, etc), which will require that the amended return be submitted by mail. If you go this route and are owed a refund, expect it to take months.

My husband's TIAA combined 1099-R covers two annuities plus a 401A and a 403B plan. TurboTax is asking the following. How do I answer it? Was This Distribution From a 403(b) Plan? The distribution rules are slightly different for 403(b) plans compared to other more common qualified retirement plans, like 401(k)s. (These plans are similar to 401(k) plans, but typically only offered by public schools and certain charities.) Yes, this is a 403(b) plan No, it's another type of qualified retirement plan

I just checked ours through the state’s refund tracker and it also says needs further review. Hopefully it doesn’t take too long. TurboTax says it’s still Pending.

I, as a customer, should not be stuck in the middle between TurboTax and Merrill. They say it is your fault, you say I should tell Merrill that it is their fault. I called them. They did not listen to me, you are not listening to me. You need to do the work to get MerrillEdge on your list, period.

TurboTax hides your full checking account and routing numbers on downloaded returns, displaying them as masked characters (e.g., XXXXXXXXX) for security and identity protection. This is standard procedure for electronic files; however, the complete banking information is still transmitted to the IRS for direct deposit.

Well, one thing is that you don't have to decide now. You can hold off until you see what TurboTax has included in their "donation update" later this month or next and then decide.

The OBBA has introduced a new deduction for overtime pay from tax year 2025. You may deduct up to $12,500 of qualified overtime premium on your Federal tax return (up to $25,000 for MFJ). The deduction is gradually phased out if your MAGI exceeds $150,000 ($300,000 for MFJ). The deduction is for the overtime premium, which is the portion over your regular pay.
For tax year 2025, your employer may list non-taxable overtime in box 14 of form W-2 with a specific label like "FLSA OT Prem". You might also receive a separate year-end statement giving you the amount. Otherwise, you have to calculate the overtime premium to enter on your tax return.
In TurboTax Online, this is how you enter the qualified overtime premium:
After entering your form W-2, you'll see a screen titled Let's Check for Other Situations
Put a checkmark on Overtime and click Continue
Follow the TurboTax questionnaire to enter your qualified overtime premium
This deduction will transfer to Schedule 1-A of your form 1040, with that amount flowing to line 13b of your form 1040. This line includes the overtime deduction among other deductions if applicable, such as the tip deduction, the additional senior deduction or the car loan interest deduction.
