Or are the publishers of TurboTax alleging there were no print problems in TurboTax 2024?

Lacerte lets you file for federal and California as head of household but not taking a dependent even though you pay for half of the persons living expenses. The federal return went through ok but California says that you have to have a dependent to claim head of household which means you have to pass the income test to qualify as a dependent. So California denied the head of household status because a dependent made too much money. Has anybody run into this before. I cannot believe that Lacerte is wrong.

I think that's because Intuit tried to take the Turbo Tax fees out of your bank account. Were the fees suppose to come out of your refund? You should have got some emails before about the fees. Check your email junk or spam folder. If the IRS is taking too long to send your refund they will ask you to pay the fees, see step 3 under What happens if the IRS reduces my refund...... https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/payments/help/what-if-my-federal-refund-isn-t-enough-to-cover-my-turbotax-fees/00/26313 If you don't pay they will automatically debit your bank account. Then when the IRS does send your refund they won't take the fees out again. See How do you justify debiting my account? https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/charges-and-fees/help/why-was-my-bank-account-auto-debited-for-turbotax-fees/00/26102

Thank for the prompt and detailed reply. I have a question about option 3 - the lump sum conversion with taxes with held at the time of the conversion. I would rather not reduce the amount of the conversion by the taxes. 1) Can I make a lump sum payment of the taxes in December from a non-retirement account? or - I may have misunderstood your answer - can I contribute the conversion taxes back to the Roth ? Thanks, Dan
You don't have to reduce the conversion. Let me try to explain again.
If you convert (let's say) $10,000 in December, you can make an estimated payment ($1500 or $2200 for most taxpayers) which is due no later than January 15. However, this will still trigger a penalty, unless you include penalty form 2210 with your tax return and use the "annualized income" method, schedule AI, to show the IRS that your payments were uneven because your income was uneven.
As an alternative, you can convert the $10,000 and ask for $2200 of withholding. That means that only $7800 goes into the new Roth IRA. But you then take $2200 from your bank account (that you already have ready to pay the tax) and deposit that money in the Roth IRA by telling them it is an indirect rollover. On your tax return, you don't report a $7800 conversion and a $2200 contribution, you report a $10,000 conversion. As long as you make the separate payment within 60 days, it counts as part of the conversion. And then, because the IRS "sees" withholding differently than payments, you won't have any need to include form 2210 with your tax return.

I don't think the 2025 tax calculator will be available until the 2025 program comes out in the fall. Meantime you can see if the irs.gov website has updated their calculator for the 2025 changes.

I'm not a techie so this is just my opinion. I don't think this would work. Windows 11 is more than a software upgrade. It depends on hardware features that most Windows 10 computers don't have. If your Windows 10 computer supports Windows 11 then you can just install it. Otherwise you can use online TT for 2025 taxes on your Windows 10 system. If you try installing Windows 11 on a flash drive, reply back to this thread and let us know how your idea works or not.

You don't get to choose an arbitrary "lived in status" or "worked in status." Your residence is where you actually live. Your work location is where you actually work. If you live and work in DC, you are a DC resident and you pay DC tax on the money that you earn for working in DC. If you move from Philadelphia to DC you are no longer a resident of Philadelphia. The location of your employer's headquarters makes no difference.
For this year, 2025, you will be a part-year resident of Philadelphia and a part-year resident of DC, so you will have to file part-year resident tax returns in both places. It's not clear where you actually worked up until now, prior to moving. If you worked in DC you will have to pay DC tax on the income that you earned there, even you were still a Philadelphia resident.

How to Access prior year online returns https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/prior-year-return/help/how-do-i-access-my-prior-year-return/00/27010 If you can't get the side menus to open up to access the prior year..... You need to start entering some basic Personal Info in 2024 for the side menu to open up. Just continue a little ways into 2024. I had to go though about 12 screens. If you used the Desktop CD/Download program then the only copy is on your computer and not saved or stored online. So you need to make and keep your own backups. Or request a transcript from the IRS https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript Or get a copy of your return using form 4506 https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4506.pdf

I sold some stock traded on a foreign exchange. My 1099 shows the normal gain/loss upon sale. It also shows an additional foreign currency loss incurred related to the timing of the sale vs the conversion of the sale proceeds to US dollars. How do I enter this additional loss in TurboTax?

I couldn't agree more. I am the family's system administrator and have supported my husband's use of Turbo Tax for over 40 years now. We are terribly disappointed at Turbo Tax forcing us to get a new computer with Windows 11. He is very happy with his Windows 10 computer and everything works on it. I am positive many of our apps and peripherals will NOT work on Windows 11. Turbo Tax, your requirement is an excellent way to drive customers away including us! If consumers can continue to use Win10 by paying Microsoft a fee for a year, why not change your policy about Turbo Tax on the desktop.

Hello. I am a remote employee for a company headquartered in Chicago, IL. I reside in Philadelphia, PA, but my position requires me to work in Washington DC. I'm recently () effective September 1stbegan subletting an apartment in Washington DC, and I want to still have my lived in and worked in status as PA, but my employer is stating that I need to have my lived in state be Washington, DC and have Washington, DC withholdings. I really want to keep both my lived in and worked in status as PA. Is this possible? Kyra Vaughn

What is your question? When Turbo Tax Desktop for 2025 comes out (usually in early November) you will need Windows 11 to install it or Mac.
