Turbo tax 2025 is not allowing me to claim my college student child as a dependent because she made over $5200. That income limit is only for a qualifying relative, not a child. I provided over half of her support and she meets all other requirements. Is this a change in the law or an error?

Kind of ludicrous.     @Jillkins9 wrote: Depending on how this is resolved, I would be hesitant to ever use Intuit again. Huh? You stated that you weren't using TurboTax in the first place.
I am using TurboTax online version.

@TomYoung i would save a copy of tilde file to another location, then remove the tilde from the file name. you do not import 2024 into 2025. Rather, when you start the 2025 app you select start a new return. the app looks for the prior year's file. a window opens up showing the 2024 tax files it found. you then select transfer return and that populates the 2025 return.
see this IRS webpage for info on EIN including how to get it. https://www.irs.gov/businesses/employer-identification-number

The ability to transfer 2024 data into a 2025 return is still present, but first we need to understand your situation.   You say you are using Online Premium. Did you proceed all the way through some initial screens, chose a product, and got to the MY INFO section?  And in the MY INFO section, was none of your data there?   If so, the most important factor is how did you prepare the 2024 return?  Did you prepare it in Online TurboTax last year, or did you use the 2024 desktop software?   If you used Online TurboTax for 2024, and if you are in the same account as you used last year, the 2024 data should have transferred automatically into your 2025 online return.  If it didn't populate, then you may have more than one online account and signed into the wrong one.   If that's your situation, I've given instructions below for looking for multiple online accounts.     On the other hand, if you used desktop TurboTax for 2024, we can tell you how to transfer the *.tax2024 data file into a 2025 return, depending on what you want to use for 2025.   If you want to use 2025 Online TurboTax, we can tell you how to transfer the 2024 desktop tax data file into the 2025 online product.   If you used Online TurboTax for 2024 and again now for 2025, and if the transfer did not occur and it's asking you to input all your data, here's how to look for other online accounts that you might have.        You can have up to 5 accounts that use the same email address for notification purposes.  A User ID may be an email address, but it doesn't have to be.  It might be only part of an email address, or it can be anything at all.   To get a list of your User IDs, reset password, and recover account access, etc., you can use the tool at the link below.  When using the Account Recovery tool, try using your phone number first if you can still access it.   After that, if necessary, then run the tool on your email address(es) you can access. NOTE: Before running the account recovery tool below, log out of all Intuit accounts including this user forum, or you might end up in a loop.  Then clear your browser Internet cache, close your browser, then reopen it, and go to the link below.  You may wish to copy this link so you can paste it into the new browser session. https://myturbotax.intuit.com/account-recovery If still no luck after running that on your phone number you can still access and email address(es) that you can access,  here's another method:          Go back to the tool again, but this time leave the data field blank, scroll down a bit, then choose the small blue link that says "Try something else", and it will look you up by other parameters.
Can I put the data in an any order?   Thank you

2007?   Sorry----TurboTax and the IRS save returns for seven years.   A 2007 return is long gone.

If you are hoping for a quick refund by filing as early as possible, you might be making a mistake that will have you waiting for your refund for months.   Users who rush to file early often end up under review or file with mistakes that require them to amend later.   If you file before the IRS is accepting returns, your return just sits on a server, where you will be powerless to fix any mistakes you discover after you file.   No changes can be made when your return is pending on a server.  And….every year…..Every. Year.  …..we get users who want to know how to fix their incorrect e-filed returns that are sitting on the server.   If you are getting earned income credit or the refundable additional child tax credit, the IRS will hold your refund until at least mid-February, no matter how early you file.
Information for dependents is entered or edited in MY INFO.   Go to MY INFO and click the name of the dependent whose information you need to change.

E-filing is permanently closed for past year returns.   You cannot e-file  2025 yet.   E-filing has not opened for 2025 returns.   The IRS will not begin to accept returns until late January, so you will need to be patient.   And.....employers and financial institutions have until the end of January to issue W-2's and 1099's.  Some kinds of 1099's will not be available until later in February.  How are you trying to file a tax return now without the 2025 tax documents you need to enter?

Your tax refund was not sent to TurboTax.   TurboTax does not handle your refund at all.   Santa Barbara Tax Products Group, LLC  (SBTPG) is the bank that handles the Refund Processing Service when you choose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your refund. Thanks for the response.   I tried opening the file  a couple of different ways: finding the file with File Explorer and clicking on it, and the typical way of directly through the 2nd screen of the program.  Neither worked.   I did find what I take to be the backup of the income tax return - the file that starts with a tilde - and that did open properly.  Looking at the Federal and State filing directions in the restored file and comparing the numbers shown there to my paper copy of the 2024 file I saw that everything agreed so I think I'm good to go.
TurboTax only keeps returns for 7 years.

A couple issues need to be clarified. In order to use/fill out various forms that have not been finalized by the IRS due to tax law changed(for example the 1099-R) you need to go to the menu up top, search for and create or open the form. Then you can fill it out and temporally complete the form. These preliminary forms appear to work properly for estimating your taxes. But it appears that TurboTax may not allow you to use their “walk you through” form process until the IRS has approved their own final IRS version of the form (which may have new questions the IRS wants answered or a slightly altered format.)
