Choose to not apply the penalty and let the IRS "bill you later". The IRS will waive the penalty automatically based on your zip code. Should an error occur on their part, a simple letter will remedy the situation.  There is no tax form to attach or box to check (as of now, 4/15/25). Note that the relief is not for all four quarters of 2024, but for 2024 quarterly estimated tax payments normally due on January 15, 2025, and 2025 estimated tax payments normally due on April 15, 2025.     Navigate to Federal > Other Tax Situations > Additional Tax Payments > Underpayment Penalties > Start or Revisit Continue through the questions until you arrive at the screen Let the IRS Bill Me Later, and you can make your selection.

I used to live in Canada as an international student until august 2024, I am currently trying to file my taxes but I can't proceed without a canadian phone number, even though I already paid for the deluxe service. Is there any way I can contact customer support or the tax professional without having a canadian phone number?

You might have figured this out already, but you can move the TurboTax Help/Digital Assistant box by clicking on the bar at the top of the box and dragging. If you drag the box up, you will see the messaging window at the bottom of the box (should say "Type or ask something"). It helps if you have the TurboTax application window maximized. It took me a while to figure this out. Yeah, bad UX design, but at least it's there.

A 2023 return can only be filed by mail. It cannot be e-filed.  You will need to choose to "file by mail" and then print, sign and date the return in ink, and mail it in.     When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.   Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

Expenses paid for classes starting in 2025 is frequently paid the year before. The IRS allows you to claim expenses for 2024 and the first 3 months of the next year on your 2024 return. The caution is that AOTC can only be claimed 4 times and the average college kid spans 6 tax years. If you have $4k in qualified expenses and qualify for the credit, then claim it. You cannot claim the credit if your MAGI is over $90,000 ($180,000 for joint filers).   You mentioned scholarships, you need to determine if any of those are restricted to tuition use or can be used for anything the student needs.    Ideally: you would enter the 1098-T with $4k in box 1 and the rest blank and claim the AOTC. The student would enter the 1098-T but take $4k out of box 1 (since you took it).   If you have scholarship restrictions, see if those can be worked into the student's amount of tuition.   The IRS has a great brochure that explains how scholarships and tax credits interact.   Reference:  What You Need to Know about AOTC and LLC

Yes, the amount of your 2024 refund that you apply to your 2025 counts as estimated tax payments and will satisfy the IRS rule that estimates are not required if you have paid in 100% of your 2024 tax.   Note for higher income taxpayers: If your AGI for 2024 was more than $150,000 ($75,000 if your filing status for 2025 is married filing a separate return), substitute 110% for 100%.   [Edited 04/16/25|5:39pm PST]   @tovaface

No, you need to enter the officer wages so they match the W-2 amount, so report the full year's earnings as officer wages.

I maxed out the allowed MFJ amounts for Arizona QCO, QFCO, and public school tax credits, but I’m receiving a message saying the amount is too large when the info is being reviewed.  The amount I’m claiming is $2,511 and our state tax liability is a little under $6000, and we took the standard deduction on our federal return.  In previous years I’ve claimed larger amounts when donating to a STO and have never run into this problem. I don’t know what I can do to remedy this.   Because of this problem I can’t e-file, so I thought I’d just mail in the state return.  When I opt for e-filing federal and mailing in state, I get an error message stating one of the formsets can’t be sent (uh, yeah, because I chose to mail it), and neither of them get sent.

Click here to Apply online for a payment plan   Your specific tax situation determines which payment options are available to you. Payment options include full payment, a short-term payment plan or a long-term payment plan   The IRS does charge a user fee for setting up or reinstating an installment agreement.   Entering into an installment agreement can provide you with peace of mind that the IRS will not pursue any of the harshest collection methods at its disposal, but interest and penalty charges will continue to accrue on your unpaid tax balances     Click here for "Facts about IRS Payment Plans"
