To get back duplicate payments (one from IRS online, one from TurboTax), cancel the payment scheduled for a later date immediately via IRS e-file Payment Services at 1-888-353-4537 (call 7-10 days after acceptance).    If both payments have already processed, the IRS typically detects this and returns one payment. Keep checking your IRS online account or set one up if you haven't already. If you see one payment posted for your tax liability and don't receive a refund of the other payment, you can file Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund, online by using an IRS online account.     When you are about to e-file your return with TurboTax, and you have already made payment directly to the IRS online, indicate in the File section of TurboTax that you are paying separately rather than giving direct debit information so that the payment won't be deducted a second time.   @twh11471

Thanks for your prompt response but I am skeptical that the IRS would be positively responsive to a request to waive a penalty based upon a TurboTax transmission problem. I would expect TurboTax to take responsibility and reimburse me for any penalties due to their acknowledgement that they were having a transmission problem and despite their support staff spending an hour on the phone with me trying to correct it, they couldn't correct the problem.

Thanks for your prompt reply. However when I navigate as you suggest I end up IN my T5 form and subsequent pages do not show any way to deduct carrying charges. I even found the line in my return but it doesn't connect to carry charges.

Are you getting an error code or just that statement? Do you have an attachment to your return that is large? You can call the IRS after they receive your return and request an abatement.  If this is your first time late filing they may wave your penalties for late filing.

Have you already filed? If so, no. But if you requested a paper check this is what will happen. See this article.   In accordance with Executive Order 14247, Modernizing Payments To and From America's Bank Account, signed on March 25, 2025, the U.S. Department of the Treasury, in coordination with the Internal Revenue Service and other federal agencies, is advancing the transition to fully electronic federal payments. This policy shift includes phase out of paper tax refund checks beginning Sept. 30, 2025, to the extent permitted by law.

Evidently, the IRS tried to do a direct deposit, but something was wrong with the information you provided  - routing or account number or both. Some banks use a different routing number for deposits than for checks. if you are unsure, call them.  The POTUS signed an EO in 9/25, that required the IRS to make refunds only by direct deposit. Eventually, payments will have to be made by direct debit

Once your return is filed, TurboTax has no control over the processing or the timing when the IRS releases your refund.    Your refund could be offset. The IRS and State Governments have the ability to offset a refund to pay for certain past due debts.  You generally will receive a letter stating what the offset was for.    The IRS provides a toll-free number, (800) 304-3107, to call for information about tax offsets.   Here are a few FAQs to help you track your refund: When will I get my federal tax refund? How do I track my state refund? Why does Where's My Refund say "approved" but TurboTax still says "accepted"? Why do some refunds take longer than others? What if my IRS refund is taking longer than 21 days?

If the message you see relates to a rental property (Schedule E), try working through the property interview again.    In TurboTax Online,  navigate to Federal > Income & Expenses > Rentals, Royalties, and Farm (Schedule E). Navigate to your Rental Property Summary page and look for Less Common Situations at the bottom. Click the pencil icon to the right of "Carryovers, limitations, at risk info, etc." and work through the interview to enter your carryovers.  Check the box for "I have passive activity losses carrying over from last year," and complete all tables that may appear and continue until you reach the property summary page again.  It is important that all boxes have an entry (zero is accepted). This should resolve the Smart Check message. Please also see this discussion thread for more information.

Yes.  I had a balance due when I completed my return in February and I "thought" I set it up to pay by April 15th.   I had the funds available and made a direct pay through the IRS  website on April 6th.  I thought that was it.  I was surprised to see that, via efile, the funds were deducted a second time from the account.  As on now, on the irs.gov site, the efile amount shows a pending.  However, the funds are gone from my account.
