The only thing you may need from prior returns is your prior-year AGI for identity verification when e-filing. You don’t add a prior-year return to your current one.    For your 2025 return, you’ll file Married Filing Jointly, and just enter both of your 2025 income.

Thanks!   I believe to e-file for IL I need to have filed for IL in the previous year (needs the AGI).   Since IL will process my 2024 return slowly, I guess I will not be able to e-file 2025 before the 2024 is accepted (which will be slow).   As such, I will be mailing the return for both years. (I know it's one day late, but I was traveling on Apr 15)

Thank you MaryK4: I ended up finding how to use the correct taxable amount in for 1099-R, box 2a, and TurboTax was excellent at navigating me to a Form 4852. I attached the VA letters of withholding and on Lines 9 & 10 of the Form 4852, was able to detail exactly why the 1099-R, box 2a, amount should be adjusted. All the correct calculations flowed properly and my reduction in income was recorded properly. I thought it best to mail in my return because I still owed. Your other suggestion about using a negative value in "Other Income" to offset the 1099-R, box 2a, amount, is a good idea, however, I thought the cleanest way and more explanatory was to go with option one using the Form 4852. Besides, I had already completed my return using the first method. Your information to me was very helpful and gave me confidence that I didn't have to file, pay, and then refile an amended 1099X return. This should work out and I would definitely be able to survive any questions about the way in which this was finally done.

Yes.  A 24 hour review is normal, generally this is the time they are processing your return.

Respond to the IRS audit notice and be prepared to remove the EIC claim if she does not meet the IRS qualifying child relationship rules, to avoid penalties. Unless she is your legal niece (child of your sibling) or was legally adopted, she will not qualify for EIC. If you provided over half of her support, you may still be able to claim her as a qualifying relative, but that does not make you eligible for the Earned Income Credit.   Who can I claim as my dependent
