Thank you. I just got done paying the underpayment online.    While doing that you have to check the reason.  I saw "extension" and checked that off.   So once payment is accepted, the extension is automatic.   I do not have to file a Form 4648.   Just have to make sure that the reason you checked off is for extension or the extension is not granted.   Also, I received an "MRC"  number from USPS.   MRC is Mail Recovery Center.   This is where all lost undeliverable mail is sent for 30 or 60 days and than "supposedly" is destroyed.   The reason it is undeliverable is the sender and receiver address is not readable.  THey will tear open the package and try to find an address to send it to.  I know for a fact they do NOT do that.   4 years ago, my tax return was "lost" and we saw it again, and the IRS never got it.   Obviously if they tear open the package they can see our address.      BTW I Sent the package containing the return in TWO  large yellow envelopes, one inside the other. I did that because of how our return from 4 years ago was "lost".   I than used heavy duty clear packing tape around the edges.   The addresses were type printed,  22 pt, and than I used the tape to cover both address labels twice.   The point is, if the package is so damaged it cannot be delivered, than it was intentional.  Simple as that.  When you look at the IRS zip code extension, 1000 means it is a payment which means there is a check inside with names, acct numbers and my signature.  They can bleach the check and use it and charge it to my bank acct.   Or they can try to hack my checking acct.     I think the USPS employee(s) saw that zip code knew the check was inside and knew it was a tax return with SSN's and names, phone numbers etc and planned to use that info, or sell that info for money.   There is no doubt in my mind that is what happened.   Happened before.   We had to change our bank acct numbers.     I called the post office and talked to one of the supervisors, than the so-called postmaster.   HE apologized.  He said it may still be deliverable but was NOT able to do anything more to help.   He than bragged about the low percentage of lost mail being 1%.   I told him 1 percent last year equated to 642,000 pieces of mail were lost.   I asked him how many pieces of mail were stolen each year.  He said he doesn't know.  I asked him about the 5961 cases of internal mail stolen last four years and how many cases were closed and prosecuted.  We got disconnected.      I don't see how USPS stays in business except that it is a govt entity and protected by the govt.   Anyway, just getting this off my chest.... Sorry to impose.   Thanks again, frank

I'm an EPD unitholder. My K-1 has a negative capital account (-$7,856) but large nonrecourse liabilities ($41,434). I'm in Forms Mode and on the K-1 Partner Worksheet, I see beginning values but not ending values for items J (Partner's Share of Profit, Loss and Capital) and item K (Partner's Share of Liabilities). Item L (Partner's Capital Account Analysis) also only shows the beginning capital account and nothing else - ending capital account is the same as the beginning. How do I trigger the Step-by-Step interview to input these amounts so my 2026 carryover is correct?
How am I supposed to estimate that? I don’t know anything about doing this.
But it’s asking what my liability is. I’m not sure what that means.

It is still the same error.    I am at the following URL: https://easy-extension.turbotax.intuit.com/app/extra-filing-app-plugin/topic-experience?filing=extension&entity=individual&state=us I would like to file this extension ASAP.
I went to the Form itself and see two columns.  Two columns were not available or displayed when using the walk me through everything method in the program.

Once you finish the Review Section and are ready to file your taxes: Select File from the menu Select Continue next to Step 3 On the We've determined the easiest way to file your taxes screen, make sure e-file is the selected status. Refer to the TurboTax article: How do I e-file my tax return? for more information.

I fill out the residency information accurately in Turbotax, but when I review the Legal Residence (Domicile) Questionnaire on my exported PDF, it shows both my spouse and me as a nonresident of Wisconsin. Only my wife was a nonresident, and it puts in a resident of WI instead of the actual country of residence for my wife. How can I fix this bug? I don't have TurboTax desktop, so I won't be able to go into form mode to manually force the change.  I saw some other posts in the community for this issue, so I know I'm not the only one.

Hi all,  I am a J1 visa research scholar (postdoctoral fellow) working in the US with a foreign employer (University in Denmark). I arrived November 2023 and currently preparing to file taxes for 2025.   My question is what residency status I should file as? According to Sprintax I am a resident alien, but after reading about exempt individual exception for trainee/teachers I was wondering if I can claim this exemption to exclude days in 2025 since I in the preceding years (2023 and 2024) was exempt and filed as non-resident under Danish-US treaty, and my salary/income is all from my foreign employer and I do not have any US-source income.  If this holds true, should I file form 1040-NR and form 8843 or I do not qualify for this tax exemption and need to file as resident alien?   Hope someone can help clarify this for me. Thank you 🙂

So, I converted $8,002, but when I called my IRA custodian again today to ask for more details about how they did the withdrawal of excess contribution transaction, they said that they only took out $8,000 plus $1,125 in gain calculated off of a base of $8,000.  When I asked why they didn’t take out $8,002, they said they weren’t able to take out more than I was eligible to contribute which was a max of $8,000.  If they had actually taken out $8,002, I think the gain would have been slightly higher than $1,125.   Because of how my IRA custodian said that the withdrawal of excess contribution had to be done, I believe that when I get my actual 2026 1099-R, it will show $9,125 in box 1 and $1,125 in box 2a.  I’m concerned that if I enter anything other than that on my substitute 1099-R with code JP 2026, it might cause a mismatch when I get my actual 1099-R next year and be “flagged” by the IRS?  Also, does code JP 2026 still make sense because when I get my actual 1099-R next year and ignore it, then the IRS will know I’m ignoring it because I already entered it and explained it this year, like you mentioned in your note?   And, Turbo Tax says I am blocked from e-filing my state taxes (which I don’t know if I can get around), though TT says I can still e-file for federal.   What do you think?  Thanks so much for your help!
I paid for a state efile.  However, when I tried to efile I was told my W2 had a control number error.  I have to file by mail.  I want a refund for the $25 fee I paid to do the state efile.

@WearyTaxee wrote: The TurboTax question is worded "Did your earned income exceed half of your support?"  Her earned income did not, but she borrowed money to cover the shortfall.  I had answered "no" to this question.  Changing this to "yes" cleared out form 8615.  Was this the correct change?   No, that should not have been changed (your original answer of "no" was correct).  Unfortunately, she is subject to the Kiddie Tax.  Dependency has nothing to do with that.
