My sister buys Turdbotax every year and does my taxes. By some miracle I got a refund. She filed my taxes and on my credit union monthly statement there is a deposit from Santa Barbra Tax Products Group. My refund was reduced for their fees which I did not authorize. You can have preparation fees deducted from your refund. My sister did my taxes so I should have  gotten my full amount by direct deposit from the IRS not the scammers. Turdbotax does not have any information on this scam company they use and you cannot talk to a person. I even made an account by still cannot get any help from their useless  customer no service. Does anybody have any advice or could help? This has been a frustrating experience. I will never again use Turdbotax is any future tax preparations direct or through someone else. Can’t trust anything these days.

On the screen "Let's enter [name]'s HSA contributions", there are only two lines.    The top line is the number carried from the code W amount in box 12 on your W-2. You cannot enter anything here, because you already did when you entered the W-2.   The bottom line is the "personal" contributions, that is, any contributions that were made to the HSA that were NOT made through the employer.   If all the contributions were made through the employer (i.e., on the W-2), then leave the bottom line blank.

The full text of the e-mail: our 2025 Portland City Personal SP return was rejected This happens from time to time, but we're here to help. icon We'll walk you through updating and e-filing your return every step of the way. What happened MTE_21SP11 - Value reported on line 11 does not match value reported on federal Form 1040 Schedule E line 26 or binary attachment named Required Statements not included. Next step We'll help you update this on your 2025 Portland City Personal SP return and e-file. To update your return Once you've opened your return in TurboTax, the details about what's causing the problem will be displayed. From there we can walk you through making the updates you need and help you e-file your return. If we're unable to resolve the errors and e-file again, we'll help you get your return filed by mail. When I opened turbo tax it said my state and federal were OK and when I changed the city form, TurboTax wants me to pay the city tax again and pay to e-file. This is a technical problem (the application did not catch the error - income was entered twice (notice it wasn't carried over from fed or state)
Did your issue with 7217 get resolved?

Thanks for clarifying things and for showing a simpler method. I over-complicated things and did unnecessary calculations. I was so hung up on the idea that since all the education expenses were covered by scholarship and 529, I would be double-dipping if AOTC was claimed. Here's what I did.   Parent return I did what you suggested and entered $4k on Box 1 and $0 on Box 5 of 1098-T. I entered nothing else in this section.   I deleted 10-Q, and that removed non-qualified portion of 529 distribution I included in misc. income. I didn't quite understand at first but it makes sense now because my student was reporting the amount I'm claiming for AOTC as taxable scholarship so there's no double-dipping.   Dependent student return In my original post, I labeled $30k as COA but it's actually the total educ exp paid by scholarship and 529 Scholarship = $20k (non-restricted) 529 distribution - $10k Tuition = $11k R&B = $18k (not exceeding school's COA) - allocated $10k to 10-Q distribution so 10-Q is fully covered. Required books/supplies = $1k   So my new calculation is QEE $11k (tuition) + $1k (books) - $4k (AOTC) = $8k (tax-free)    1098-T Box 1=$8k   Box 5=$20k    or   Box 1=$7k    Box 5=$20k   $1k entered in educ exp section for books Total Scholarship of $20k - $8k(QEE) = $12k taxable scholarship (reported in Sch 1 Line 8r)   I didn't even enter R&B anywhere in my student's tax return. As you indicated, scholarship in excess of QEE is taxable regardless of how it's spent (R&B, travel, shopping, etc.). Do I need to enter R&B?   Lastly, my student has $15k of total income from wages ($11k), dividends and capital gains before taxable scholarship so she needs to file a tax return and file Form 8615 (for kiddie tax). Fortunately, this year, we're in a lower tax bracket, and she is taxed under parent's tax rate.   I hope I accounted for everything correctly. Thanks so much for your help!

So, i had to take a RMD distribution for my mother's traditional IRA in 2025 and that became my Inherited IRA. I did the RMD before the end of the year. In the state taxes part of Turbo Tax they are asking about my Retirement Income. It must be from this. Now, it says, choose the description or type of retirement distribution that best matches your state's retirement from the list below.   THe list has several choices. but only a few seem to apply here. I am not selecting Rollover or annuity or early distribution. I will select the Traditional or Roth: I'm under 59.5.  That seems to be the one that applies here. Just making sure this is right. I called Vanguard and they could not help me.

I am not sure of the context of your question, but if you are trying to list these children as dependents, you can list the 18 year old and the 17 year old in any case, but the 21 year old only if he/she is a full-time student.   TurboTax tries not to ask you for information that it does not need.   If the context is something else, come back and tell us.

I had a strange bug, which I worked around, but should be fixed. Subsequent to having TurboTax automatically select itemized deductions, because they were higher, I was due a refund on my federal return and chose to apply 100% of it toward next year's taxes. Subsequent to that and starting, but not completing, online filing, I returned to the deduction page. It chose the standard deduction and considered itemized deductions 0. Because I already chose the refund amount to apply to next year above my new lower refund, that was now an error. As a workaround to this bug, I changed my amount applied to next year back to zero. I could then correctly have TurboTax select itemized deductions, reverting the expected refund back to the higher amount. I could then apply 100% of this refund to next year and file. When calculating deductions, TurboTax should consider how it affects the amount of tax owed/refunded regardless of what we choose to do for the next year. Instead it chose from the net amount after I chose, which was zero, and assumed it was the same for both Standard and Itemized and chose Standard.
