You should be able to claim her as your dependent under the Qualifying Relative rules if she has lived in your home for the entire year and the other requirements.
To be a Qualifying Relative -
1. The person cannot be your qualifying child or the qualifying child of any other taxpayer. A child is not the qualifying child of any other taxpayer if the child's parent (or any other person for whom the child is defined as a qualifying child) is not required to file an income tax return or files an income tax return only to get a refund on income tax withheld. 2. The person either (a) must be related to you or (b) must live with you all year as a member of your household. 3. The person's gross income for the year must be less than $5,200 (social security does not count) in 2025 4. You must provide more than half of the person's total support for the year. 5. The person must be a U.S. citizen or a U.S., Canada, or Mexico resident for some part of the year. 6. The person must not file a joint return with their spouse with the following exception - You can claim a person as a dependent who files a joint return if that person and that person’s spouse file the joint return only to claim a refund of income tax withheld or estimated tax paid.

I provide for and care for 100% of the time for a child of my ex boyfriend. She has lived solely with me for two+ years as my own child. I am submitting paperwork for permanent guardianship of her currently. It is a lengthy process I’m sure so my question is after I submit paperwork or after it’s granted will I be able to claim her as a qualified dependent?

I purchased the premier edition with free state edition and $10 credit. I downloaded the premier edition and activated it, but it hangs at this account has a license code and the only choices are add another license code; cancel or sign out. How do I get out of this? When I go to the turbo tax menu and click download state form it wants to charge me, even though it is included supposedly.

I mean, the IRS is not accepting returns before 1/26/2026. I honestly don't know why anyone would want to submit their return prior to that date.

Did you already e-file?
Did you click that big orange button that said “Transmit my return now?” If you did that, you cannot do anything to fix it yet. You have to wait for the email that tells you if your return was accepted or rejected.
Since the IRS will not begin to accept/reject returns until January 26, you are going to be waiting in “pending” for awhile. Your return is sitting on a server, where you cannot fix it or get it back.
You cannot change or add anything on the return that you just e-filed, nor can you stop it. It is too late, just like when you put an envelope in a US mailbox on the corner. The IRS does not allow you to take it back.
If you left out a W-2, a 1099G, or a dependent, or a 1099 etc…DO NOT change your return while it is “pending.” The changes will go nowhere.
Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return. If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes to your tax return and re-submit your return.
If the IRS accepts your return, however, then you have to wait longer until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund. THEN you can prepare an amended tax return and e-file or mail it in. You have to be able to work from that return exactly the way it was when it was e-filed originally. You will need to use a form called a 1040X.
Meanwhile, DO NOT go in and start changing anything on your return in the system, or you will make a mess for yourself. Sit tight and wait until you see what the IRS does with the return you just e-filed
The Form 1040X you need becomes available in late February, But wait until your return has been processed.

If your divorce was final at the end of 2025 your filing status for tax year 2025 is Single, unless you are the custodial parent of the children. In that situation you may be able to file as Head of Household. You will not file married filing separately if your divorce was final by December 31.
Start a new account with a new user ID. It is too difficult to remove all the embedded "spouse stuff" from an account that was used for a past year joint return. It will cause all kinds of errors.

What is a "qualifying person" for Head of Household?
If you qualify as Head of Household, when you enter your marital status (single or married filing separately) into MyInfo, and then enter your qualifying dependent, TurboTax will offer HOH as your filing status.

When was your divorce final? If you were divorced in2025 you now file as Single. If you used Turbo Tax last year you should start a brand new account for yourself and not transfer from last year. You can not remove a spouse or switch the order of names. TurboTax will not allow you to remove the primary taxpayer on the return. And you should not try to change the order of names. If you were listed as the spouse and want to be the primary taxpayer now or delete the primary person, you will need to start a new return by logging out and starting over with a new account and new user name and password. You will not be able to transfer from the prior year. Online is only good for 1 return per account. But you can use the same email address for 5 accounts.
