I was a running start student and completed an AA the same time I graduated high school. After taking a break, I decided I wanted to study science and returned to community college. I took a bunch of prerequisites and just transfered to a univeristy to pursue my bachelors degree. Essentially, I have a whole lot of credits I can't do anything with, but I am still currently working on my first bachelors degree. Since I have so many credits and only some could be transferred over, I am considered a junior at my new insititution. I'm confused by the language of "first four years of higher education" and "4 years of college credit before 2025" and thus am confused if I qualify for the AOTC or not.

Sorry----when you use online you do not get five federal e-files like you get with desktop. With online you get one return per fee, and you pay separate fees for federal and state.
When you use online TurboTax software you get one return per fee.
Each return needs its own email, account and user ID. If you use the same account and user ID for a second return, the second one overwrites the first return and it is lost forever.

Hi, Please confirm if I'm answering the below correctly as I questions wording seems confusing. 1099-Div form #8. Foreign Country or US Possession shows Various, #14-16 has no information. If I remember correctly TT used to have one option to either specify the state or to pick Multiple States. Now it's asking the following: I earned exempt-interest dividends in only one state (has a drop down to pick a state or multiple states) - would I pick this just want to make sure I'm doing it right. I earned exempt-interest dividends in more than one state (if I check this it's asking for each state and amount) Thanks

That's one of several drawbacks with Online TurboTax versus the desktop product. The online version can only prepare 1 Federal return per online account per year. A second return requires a different account and separate fee. Do not try to prepare the second return in the same account, or it overwrites the first. How did you end up in Online TurboTax? Do you have Windows 10 and couldn't install the desktop version, and so you used the migration offer presented when you tried to install desktop TurboTax? If so, the migration offer for Windows 10 users is good for a single Federal return (Premium Edition) and 1 state return. There is no efiling fee in the online product.

OK Thanks. That is what the instruction says, but I wish there was more clarification to be found for that instruction. So, when preparing the 2026 return, it doesn't appear that I need to clarify the breakdown of the 1099R amount because it is truthfully the amount due for 2026.

Dear Turbotax, For the last 3 years I have based on your guidance handled the 529 that I administer in the following manner when doing taxes for my grandson who is the beneficiary. There are no AOTC credits involved. Qualified 529 withdrawals less allowed room & board less books = 529 money that can be applied to tuition. Tuition less remaining 529 money = tuition that scholarship money can be applied to. If tuition remains, there are no taxes. If scholarship money remains, it is taxed as excess scholarship (other Income, 1040 line 😎 . The tuition amount paid by the 529 is included as an Other Scholarship entry. 1099-Q not entered based onTurbo Tax guidance. Now that the product has been changed for 2025, I can no longer tell whether or not this approach holds water, what I should enter or where I should enter it. This is a TRIVIAL return (1 interest entry, 1 dividend entry) with the exception of the 529 QTP which should not be complicated. WHAT SAY YOU TURBOTAX?

No, the two W-2 forms have different employer names. One W-2 only shows the regular pay, while the other only shows the overtime pay. The overtime pay only comes from the second employer, so Box 1 in that W-2 only includes overtime pay. Therefore, Box 14 QOC amount is almost equal to Box 1 (with some offset for rate adjustment). But TurboTax thinks that Box 14 QOC item cannot be greater than one-third of Box 1- Box 7. So it doesn't let me continue E-File.

@AmyC all true AS LONG AS the scholarships are "unrestricted" in their use. Restricted scholarships MUST BE applied to QEE before determining if there is QEE remaining to create AOTC on the parent's tax return. Unrestricted scholarships CAN BE applied to QEE (and to create the AOTC, don't apply it, but rather use up to $4000 of QEE on the parent's tax return to create AOTC as you explain). for example, if the QEE is $15,000 and there is $15,000 of scholarships that are all restricted in their use to tuition, then the $15,000 need to be netted against each other. Then, there is no QEE remaining and therefore no AOTC opportunity.
