make sure you've followed all the steps here.   https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/retirement-benefits/enter-backdoor-roth-ira-conversion/L7gGPjKVY_US_en_US   If you converted to Roth then after the 1099-R input there are a series of questions you need to answer to identity the distribution as a Roth conversion.   You've answered the IRA contribution and if there is no question about electing the contribution as deductible, then it's assumed to be non-deductible.   Then check Form 8606 to see what is going on - should see Line 1 $7000, Line 2 $1979, Line 8 $7000 and the tax calculation on lines 9-12 etc.   I see you have a $1979 basis in the IRA, but $0 market value is this correct - I think this means you would have had some losses in the past?  If you have multiple IRAs the MV question applies across all Trad IRAa (not Roth) not just the account in which the backdoor Roth was done.  Turbotax implies you need Form 5498 for this question but you should get the MV from your year-end brokerage statements per guidance from IRS on Form 8606 Line 6.   https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i8606.pdf

I understand the law. What I don’t understand is why Turbo Tax will allow entries that violate that law without warning the filer (me).  I’ve found that Turbo Tax doesn’t automatically create a Form 8606 each year when my prior year forms are in the system. The 8696!is the key to maintaining an accurate account of your basis.

Hello Robert: Thanks for your informative response. However, I am still a bit confused. Although I am filing form 5329 for a waiver on missing 2025 RMD (meaning to waive the penalty at 10% of the missing 2025 RMD on 2025 return) , this missing 2025 RMD is not included in the 2025 total 1099R (meaning the missing 2025 RMD is not included in 2025 income). Should I manually adjust the missing 2025 RMD on the 2025 return on1099R section though I did not have that 1099R in 2025? Consequently, on the 2026 return, I can manually adjust the 2025 missing RMD to code P and enter code 7 for the 2026 RMD which will be taken in 2026? Appreciate your elaboration so much.

Check the amount of your Federal refund that appears on your Federal Form 1040, Line 35a.   Does that line match what the IRS said they were sending at the IRS "Where's My Refund" tool? https://www.irs.gov/refunds   Who was the direct deposit from?  You can look in your online banking account.   Was it from the IRS/US Treasury, or was it from a state tax agency, or was it from a third-party bank?   Did you have any TurboTax fees that you chose to pay out of the Federal refund?    If so, that would involve a third-party bank in the chain.    If you used that option, does the lowered amount equal the amount of your product fees and sales taxes, plus an additional $40 service fee for that option  ($45 for California filers?)    If you are also due a state tax refund, it comes separately.

Make sure that you have unmarked the Maximize box.  Also make sure that you have not entered any thing regarding an individual 401(k).  You could also try deleting the Keogh, SEP and SIMPLE Contributions Worksheet and reentering the SEP contribution.   Be aware that if you are also reporting an ordinary traditional IRA contribution or a self-employed health insurance deduction, the sum of the SEP contribution, traditional IRA contribution and the self-employed health insurance deduction and the deductible portion of self-employment taxes cannot exceed net profit.  Decreasing the SEP contribution could be resulting in an increase in one of the ordinary traditional IRA deduction or delf-employed health insurance deduction.

"I could empty the account before years end but roth converting it would've taken until the next year,"   Whether the conversion is done directly or indirectly, the timing of a Roth conversion is based on when the distribution from the traditional IRA occurs.  Even if not deposited until early 2026, depositing the $1030.61 into a Roth IRA within 60 days of the date of the distribution would have resulted in it being a Roth conversion reportable on the 2025 tax return.   "shouldn't I have to pay more?"   No, you shouldn't pay more.  Only the taxable portion of an early-distribution is subject to penalty.   Note that after applying $899 of basis to the $1030.61 distribution, $6,101 of basis remains to apply to the conversion of the $7,000.  The result is that the taxable amount of the Roth conversion of the $7,000 is $899.  A Roth conversion is not subject to an early-distribution penalty, so that $899 taxable portion of the Roth conversion is not subject to penalty.
