A company I worked for a decade ago is dissolving and last year asked me to redeem my paper stock certificate. Later that year I received a check for the stock as a cash liquidation distribution. For tax purposes, I received only a 1099-DIV with box 9 (cash liquidation distributions) as the only box filled. That amount equals the amount of the check I previously received. I also received a summary of the transaction from the company which includes the issue date of stock, number of shares, liquidation date and cost basis. I did not receive a 1099-B. Based on the cost basis I made a profit from redeeming the stock certificate. I am planning on manually entering this as a stock sale with the cash distribution as the proceeds and using the cost basis they gave me. Does this sound correct or should it be handled in a different way?

You file both a 1065 for activities from January to June and an 1120S for the balance of the year. Yes, you need to file a 2553, signed by every owner. But since you didn't file on time (within 2½ months), you need to seek "Late Election Relief" under Revenue Procedure 2013-30. You’ll need to write "FILED PURSUANT TO REV. PROC. 2013-30" at the top of Form 2553 and explain that your failure to file on time was "inadvertent." And yes, you mark the 1065 "final". You may need to paper file the 1120S for 2025, attaching a copy of the 2553 election.

In order to enter information on those lines you'll enter the amounts you received as "Other Income".
In the "Wages and Income" section of your federal return, scroll all the way to the bottom and find the section titled "Less Common Income". At the bottom of that is "Miscellaneous Income". Click start and then scroll to the bottom again and click "Other Reportable Income".
On the next screen there is a little "Add" button. When you click that you get a description and a dollar box. In the first one enter the name of the company that sent the 1099-K and the full dollar amount. Then click "Add" again and enter "received in error" and the same amount as a negative to cancel out the original.

A "Golden Parachute" is a massive payout given to top-level executives (CEOs, CFOs, etc.) when their company is bought out or undergoes a merger. If that payout is more than 3 times their average salary, the IRS calls it "excess." The IRS hits the recipient with a 20% excise tax on top of their regular income tax to discourage these massive payouts.
If you are not a high-level corporate executive who just survived a multi-million dollar merger:, Contact the Payer immediately. Tell them: "You reported my compensation in Box 3 (Excess Golden Parachute) instead of Box 1 (Nonemployee Compensation). I need a corrected 1099-NEC."

I just found the box I needed to check to be sent to the next screen where I could give the information about my Qualified Charitable Distribution. The 1099-R I received from my IRA provider indicated only that I had taken a distribution from my IRA. It also stated that the taxable amount was not determined. So when I entered this 1099-R in Turbo Tax it showed it as a taxable distribution. The following screen listed about 9 questions about that distribution. One of them was, "Was any amount of this distribution given to charity?" That was the box I had originally missed. Once I clicked on that box, it took me to the screen where I could enter the information about the charitable distribution. Then the full amount became exempt from taxation.

If your address doesn't match the one on your ID it will definitely be the problem. Just updated mine and I was able to use my refund to pay. This is after getting the same roundabout answers from customer service as well. No complaints about my CS representative, she was really nice and brought in her supervisor to help, but they did not know how to fix the problem.

No, do not change the form to "FL" in TurboTax. You should enter the 1099-NEC exactly as it is written. However, you will fix the actual tax calculation in the North Carolina State Section of the software. However, you will need to do some addtional work.
Before you get to the state returns, make sure your Personal Info (or "About You") section is accurate:
State of Residence: North Carolina
"Did you live in another state?": Yes (Select Florida)
Enter the date you moved to North Carolina.
Now you will allocate your income in your NC return.
This is the most important part. When you open the North Carolina State return, TurboTax will recognize you as a Part-Year Resident.
It will show you a list of all your income (including that 1099-NEC) and ask you to allocate it.
You will see a column for "Total Income" and a column for "North Carolina Income." In column for NC, you will put a zero that indicates that none of this was earned in North Carolina.

Not until the IRS updates the Form 1040-X instructions for tax year 2025 can TurboTax provide a 2025 Form 1040-X.
Current IRS Form 1040-X instructions are for tax year 2024 - https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040x.pdf

This is the most reliable way to create a second Form 8881 on a Mac. Click the Forms icon in the top right to enter Forms Mode. Look at the list of forms on the left. If you already have one Form 8881, it will be listed there. Go to the top menu bar (outside the TurboTax window, the Apple menu bar) and select Forms > Open Form. In the search box, type 8881. When you select it, TurboTax should ask if you want to create a "New Copy". Select this. You can then name the copies (e.g., "His Business" and "Her Business") to keep your records clear.
