I, an independent full-time student over the age of 24 who can not be claimed as a dependent by anybody, had scholarships/grants exceed the cost of my tuition by about $7,500 in 2025. My grant/scholarship money does not specify that it is required to go toward tuition. Therefore, is it still possible for me to claim the AOTC by taxing the full amount of my scholarship/grant money? If so, is this done by allotting the full amount of my grants/scholarships as "amount paid toward room and board" on the TurboTax platform? Does it matter if I did not actually make a payment of tuition, since my university deducted the cost of tuition from my scholarship/grants and disbursed the excess grant money to me? Is taxing my full scholarship/grant amount meant to compensate for this? Additionally, I have been paying back a debt I owe to a different university for tuition for a course. I paid $120 toward this debt last year. Would this be included in my educational expenses? I did not get a 1098-T from this school. Should I therefore add this amount to my educational expenses on top of my tuition from the university I attended last year?

After entering all the information, when reviewing the income and deductions section, TurboTax shows a difference in the amount entered versus the amount allowed. When I click on the "Why the difference" link the help box that pops up still shows the SALT cap for MFJ as $10,000, which is incorrect. The SALT cap for 2025 was raised to $40k under the BBB.

I paid through escrow so I claimed what I paid for that yr. 2025 1098 shows both yrs amount. We're talking less than $1400 per yr. Would I be okay if I try to fix it by only claiming one yr for 2025 and not get audited? Im afraid of opening up a can of worms by amending. I believe my tax liability is 17k.

I am a military member domiciled and stationed in California while my spouse is a civilian domiciled in Alaska. They never had wages earned in California. How would I complete this part of my taxes? Do I just put how much I earned on the California amount box? Or is this pertaining to how much my spouse earned? I am just confused.

I'm having the same problem. Turbo Tax won't let me change form 2210 AI line 14. When the program is calculating the annualized tax due for each of the first 3 periods, it looks like it is applying the same value for the enhanced senior deduction to all 4 periods (using the enhanced senior deduction for the last period for all 4 periods, rather than calculating what it would be based on the annualized AGI for each of the other 3 periods). I suppose we could fudge the entered AGI values for the 1st three periods to compensate for this, but I think Turbo Tax should either calculate the enhanced senior deduction based on the annualized AGI's for the first 3 periods, or let you change line 14 as called for in the instructions.

Does that mean you want to go back to the interview to change something, but TurboTax thinks you were finished, so the interview is closed? As long as you haven't actually mailed it or efiled, you can make any changes before filing. To get back into the return interview, go to the TAX HOME and look for a link "Add a State." That doesn't really add one, but opens the interview back up. NOTE: If you originally selected to file by mail, and as long as you didn't actually mail it, you can change that filing method to efile, if desired.

No one can give me a clear answer on this I have done all the desktop side support that can be done. When looking at the payment I selected it to be taken out my refund when I first started filing on the 18th. That seems to be the issue because when you goto the my turbotax section and then click on fees it errors out as well. I am getting so annoyed with this Ive been using turbotax for a very long time and its never been hard. Also no CSR can give me a clear answer. I have been told so many different things still the same issue. "We hit a snag"

Does "get my 2023 taxes" mean you want to get a copy of a 2023 return you filed in Online TurboTax? if so, here's how: This answer assumes your previous returns were prepared in Online TurboTax. Any return prepared in desktop TurboTax will not be in an Online account. Here's how one would normally find past-year online returns and how to troubleshoot for multiple accounts (User IDs) if necessary. Many people end up with more than 1 account. The pathway to download the PDF or tax data file depends on whether or not you have started an online 2025 return. I provide both scenarios below, so choose which one is appropriate for your situation. If you have not yet started a 2025 online return: Sign in to your account. What you see next depends on whether or not you have already started a 2025 return in that account. If your left column menu is minimal, and does not have a Tax Home tab displayed, that would imply you have not started preparing a 2025 return in that account. If you haven't yet started a return, it will start asking you some questions. Answer those preliminary questions on a few screens (you don't actually have to prepare a return), and then when you are far enough into the process, the left menu column will change, and you'll then see a Tax Home option in the left menu column. Do not click the Documents tab. Instead, click on Tax Home. Then on the Tax Home screen, scroll way down to the bottom to "Your Tax Returns & Documents". Expand that section and choose the past year you want. If your past returns are not shown there, then you likely have multiple accounts and signed into the wrong one. I'll tell you below how to troubleshoot. If you have already started a 2025 online return: Log in, and if you've already started a 2025 return in that account, then it may already open at the Tax Home. If not, click the Tax Home tab in the left column menu. Do not use the Documents tab. At the Tax Home scroll down and expand "Your Tax Returns & Documents." If the past returns are not there, see the steps below. If you do all that and can't find the past return, here's how to look for multiple accounts: You can have up to 5 accounts that use the same email address for notification purposes. A User ID may be an email address, but it doesn't have to be. It might be only part of an email address, or it can be anything at all. To get a list of your User IDs, reset password, and recover account access, etc., you can use the tool at the link below. When using the Account Recovery tool, try using your phone number first if you can still access it. After that, if necessary, then run the tool on your email address(es) you can access. NOTE: Before running the account recovery tool below, log out of all Intuit accounts including this user forum, or you might end up in a loop. Then clear your browser Internet cache, close your browser, then reopen it, and go to the link below. You may wish to copy this link so you can paste it into the new browser session. https://myturbotax.intuit.com/account-recovery If still no luck after running that on your phone number you can still access and email address(es) that you can access, here's another method: Go back to the tool again, but this time leave the data field blank, scroll down a bit, then choose the small blue link that says "Try something else", and it will look you up by other parameters.
