@cottagecharm11 wrote: Where are these .tax files then. When I called for customer support they told me to search for them as .tax I followed their instructions on how to do it and they were gone. The support person then said they must have been deleted! Anecdotally, some users have said theirs ended up in the Recycle Bin or unknowingly in OneDrive or other cloud storage, Time Machine, etc. Rarely a Windows user has said that they found theirs in another Windows user account; i.e., they had multiple Windows user accounts, such as an Admin account or other user, and they signed into each one and ran all the searches in each Windows user account.

@cottagecharm11 wrote: I learned my lesson and now make sure to do a back up as soon as I finish my tax return. I also usually keep the file open while working on my takes. If I need to close it I make sure to turn off my wifi, that is the only way to stop TT from forcing me to do an update every time in order to reopen my tax return, even if I did an update 5 minutes ago. I actually save a backup copy of the data file after every work session. I copy the data file to a USB flash drive. Then I always have 2 instances of the last work session if needed. Luckily my file has never disappeared. Are you using a Mac? I think the Mac version updates automatically at every launch of TurboTax, or at least it did in previous years. Since you said you have to turn your wifi off, I suspect you are using a Mac. In the Windows version one can adjust Updater Preferences to turn off automatic updates if desired (or make it prompt). To get to those preferences Windows users can launch the program then at the main interface go to the upper TurboTax menubar and click on ONLINE and in the dropdown menu choose Updater Preferences.

If it doesn't automatically find the files, click Browse to find the 2024 file that you want to transfer from.
You do not need the 2024 program.

I've been using Turbo Tax on my Windows 10 PC for years. Just bought a Windows 11 PC. The old files migrated from my old PC to my new one. I can see these prior year files. When I buy and then load the 2025 program will prior year information automatically populate the new version? I tried to install the 2024 version, but the license code was not accepted. Please help.

The court order cannot override the tax laws, and the IRS does not have to follow the court order. But you have to follow the court order, as long as it doesn't conflict with the tax laws.
If the child lived with you for more than half the year, under the tax laws you are the custodial parent. In order to satisfy the court order you have to give the other parent (the noncustodial parent) a signed Form 8332 to allow the other parent to claim the child as a dependent for 2025. Even though the noncustodial parent claims the child as a dependent, you, as the custodial parent, can still claim the child care credit and you can use the child as a qualifying child for the Earned Income Credit (EIC) and to allow you to file as head of household, provided that you meet the other requirements for those benefits.
The noncustodial parent can claim the child tax credit for the child, and any education credits. (Education credits would not apply to a 4-year-old. They are for college or other post-secondary education.)
Under the tax laws, the tax benefits based on the child cannot be split in any way other than what I have indicated.

This forum is for helping people use TurboTax to prepare their income tax returns. We don't deal with sales tax. There is no income tax on purchases.

Just downloaded Premier from Costco on Windows11. Up and running. Have been using Premier for at least 20 years. Imported last years data ... no problem. Tried to close and save program and got message "File not found Check the file name and try again". Target location correct. Have no idea as to what is happening. The file extension by defalt says *tax2025.

I am wondering if there is some weird interaction with the online version which I declined.

You are posting from online TurboTax. The choices for do-it-yourself software online are Deluxe or Premium. If you are entering data that requires an upgrade to Premium, it will upgrade automatically. What are you trying to enter?
And you say you "can't get certain documents"-----what documents? Many tax documents have not yet been issued by employers, businesses or financial institutions.
