you could contact the Social Security Admin and explain your situation. W-2s are sent to them and it forwards the info to the IRS.

if you both agree to file a joint 2025 federal return, that's permissible because you were married on 12/31/2025 even though separated. Texas has no personal income taxes so there's nothing to file for income deemed earned in Texas. As to Virginia, she might need to file form 760PY
here's a loink to the instructions

You may have answered something incorrectly in MY INFO. Click each child's name and go slowly and carefully through each interview question again --make sure you read each screen top to bottom before you click on an answer.
Make sure you have entered your child as a dependent in My Info, and that you have entered the child's Social Security number. Careful— do not say that your child’s SSN is not valid for employment. If your child was born in 2025 make sure you said he lived with you the whole year. There is an oddly worded question that asks if the child paid over half their own support. Say NO to that question.

don't know your exact situation so here's some info
Illness can be considered a temporary absence under specific conditions. These typically include:
Medical Documentation: A doctor's note or medical documentation is often required to validate the absence due to illness.
Duration of Absence: The absence should be for a limited time, generally defined by the employer's policies or state regulations.
Serious Health Condition: The illness must meet the criteria of a serious health condition as defined by relevant laws, such as the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), which includes conditions that require ongoing treatment or significant time off.
Notification: Employees are usually required to notify their principal or HR department as soon as possible about the need for leave, often following specific procedures outlined in the employee handbook
during a temporary absence, you are considered as occupying the residence. the rules require occupancy for 2 out of 5 years before sale. since local laws vary and this may affect your qualifications, confer with a tax pro w

TurboTax 2025 currently appears to be using an incorrect calculation on CA Form 540 for the top marginal tax bracket (>$742,953). For example, given a single filer with a Line 19 taxable income of $1,000,000, TurboTax calculates a Line 31 Tax value of $104,854. This is incorrect, as per the 2025 FTB tax schedule (www.ftb.ca.gov/forms/2025/2025-540-tax-rate-schedules.pdf) and online calculator (webapp.ftb.ca.gov/taxcalc/), this should be $72,219.84 + 12.3% of the amount over $742,953, or $103,837. From trying a few values, it appears TurboTax is incorrectly using a value closer to 12.7% as the top marginal rate, rather than 12.3%. This affects both the online and Mac desktop versions. Token #: 1432649260-78307181
EDIT: This is fixed in the latest CA forms update, and the calculation is now correct.

here are the rules
Qualifying child – and eligible to be claimed as a dependent, the rules are:
Must be a US citizen, resident alien or national or a resident of Canada or Mexico
Related to you - son. daughter. stepchild, eligible foster child, or a descendant of any of them; brother, sister, half-brother, half-sister, stepbrother, stepsister or a descendant of any of them. Adopted child if legally adopted or an individual lawfully placed with the taxpayer for legal adoption. An eligible foster child is one placed with the taxpayer by an authorized placement agency or by judgment decree or order of any court with jurisdiction.
Must be either: a) under 19 at the end of the year and younger than the taxpayer claiming them or b) under 24 at the end of the year and a full-time student. A full-time student is one who is enrolled full-time in school (but not online or correspondence schools) during any part of 5 calendar months during the calendar year or took a full-time course of institutional on-farm training under the supervision of an accredited agency.
Same principal abode as you for more than ½ the tax year. Temporary absences are ignored. Example, for schooling.
Hasn’t provided over ½ their own support. Taxable or nontaxable scholarship payments are ignored in determining support.
Hasn’t filed a joint return – unless there is no tax liability.
If a qualifying child of more than one person there are tie-breaker rules
if they meet all of these rules, check that you have answered the questions as described above. if born during the year, you must check that they lived with you all year
if you are an only parent, you must be the custodial parent (the one the child spent the greater number of nights with during the year). if you are not, you must obtain form 8332 from the custodial parent. it must be filed with your return or with form 8453 if you want to e-file your return
if none of this helps contact support. you can allow them to see your return to determine the issue.
