@djpegg 1) "Desktop" /downloaded software....Premier always contains a free state software set, no matter where you buy it. (E-filing that state will be ~$20-$25) 2) Only Desktop Deluxe may be found without a state software set (but only at an authorized non-TTX website, like on Amazon) 3) "Online" Premium version (note the different name, subtle hey?) is priced for Federal only. If a State is added, that will add on $39 right now, but $64 later (not sure when "later" is. I seem to recall it is anyone who "Pays" for it after 28 February, but don't know what the switch date will be this year)

There is an update this morning after a few weeks quiet, which opened up charitable donations for Schedule A. 1099B/R still pending. Also got my state program by the promised date. No one here knows when what will come but it will be in the next few weeks. If trying to do estimates for Q4 ES you can use forms mode for 1099R / 8606 if familiar with that. The 3903 email signup is a bug I flagged with the moderators, annoying but not critical, just check in the app periodically. Other multi-decade users have commented the block on these sections is unprecedented, hampered year-end planning and communication has been lacking. Clearly, Turbotax is not releasing the sections until the forms changes and calcs are certified for filing and I'm sure the shutdown has delayed the IRS side. We'll see what happens next few weeks - but I remain optimistic that Turbotax will come thru. Good luck.

Why won't you give me a price for Turbotax Premier without State Taxes before I buy from Intuit. I don't like surprises at the end.

All So the software Update overnight (6-7 Jan) did fix the issue we had with the improper state 4th Qtr estimated tax carryover into 2025 taxes....but with qualifications. 1) Works just fine for newly created 2025 tax files. 2) For files created before the software update, they've added a new check (see pics below) that, somewhere during the prep, will ask the user to confirm the $$ amount. Of course, that assumes the user understands what the software is referring to. I don't know yet when/where the software will ask for that yet. In the 3rd picture, if I manually changed the $$ amount in the carryover worksheet (the lower-down tan box in forms mode) to the correct $0 (in my case) the red box highlight went away, and the upper table reflects the proper $0 too. ______________ Of course, the "Online" users will have to depend on the software prompting the users for the correct amount. _________________ Unfortunately, I see that the 1099-R section interview is still not ready. Let the screaming for that section begin. ___________________________________ Carryover worksheet before update (pre-existing file) $1500 should be $0 ________________________________ Carryover worksheet after update (pre-existing file) $1500 should be $0 ______________________________ Carryover worksheet after update (pre-existing file) manually corrected 4Q State Est _______________________________

btw this topic has been going here for months, seems unlikely at this point 3 months from filing that Intuit will reverse course It's not millions of users affected. Total desktop users is about 4 mil (compared to 35 mil 'units' for online/live services) and we don't know split but Mac market share in is 25% and Win 10 share of Windows in US has dropped from 2/3 to 1/3 over the course of the year. So theoretically 4mil * 0.75 * 0.33 = 1mil Win 10 users. But the true number is likely already lower as Intuit announced months ago they would not support it which would have given some users a reason to move to Win 10 sooner than later. In their last earnings, Intuit reported a 4% decline in desktop and cited 'loss of market share for low average revenue per return users' i.e. they are apparently fine losing desktop users as long as online revenue is growing. Whether Intuit's projections on user losses for Win 10 work out right or wrong we'll see but it won't affect the bottom line much either way. Desktop revenue is $200mil which is not nothing, but only 1% of Intuit's revenue, and only 5% of total Turbotax revenue. Anyway - you can try writing to Intuit to make your voice heard, but then your options remain - to upgrade to Win 11 (ESU only 9 months to go tho I understand wanting to see what happens and not upgrading just for Turbotax); use a Win 11 VM; use online; use something else - HRB and TaxAct are supporting Win 10. More chat on this here since August and many other threads and no doubt more to come https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/taxes/discussion/turbotax-desktop-2025-will-not-be-compatible-with-windows-10/01/3698453#M1367797 Good luck

My father passed in June 2025 and I am the sole heir to his estate. I am also the executor. In July 2025 I sold my father's cottage while it was in probate for $109,900. The appraised value on his DOD was $122,000. I just have a few questions I want to clear up: When I get the 1099-S from the settlement company, this will be reported on the 1041 form via the estate, correct? How do I report my proceeds from the sale of the cottage on the 1040? Ie do I issue myself a K1, or is that only done if there are capital gains? As the cottage was sold under the appraised value, do I get to carry over the capital losses on my 1040, or does the loss just stay with the estate?

for the online option note Turbotax has an offer for 2025 if you do buy desktop you can switch to online premium for Fed+State for no extra cost. Normally online is a more expensive option if you need the premium version or file multiple returns. The installer will stop on Win 10 and offer this option but see details below https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/marketing/ty25-ttd-direct-offer/L0aUgksJ... Be aware online is not identical to desktop, the workflow/functionality is different in particular no forms mode, and you can only prepare 1 return per account. I think it does have some better document upload/import capabilities however. See this article https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/articles/community-news-announcements/turbotax-windows-10-desktop-...

The 1099-R form for 2025 has already been released by the IRS. Other tax software already has the updated form. Why is it taking so long for Turbotax to update this product?

And....just to add.....If your soon to be ex spouse files first and claims the children on a tax return, your own e-file will be rejected. To prevent that from happening, get IP PINs from the IRS for the children and use them on your own tax return.
GET IP pin in order to e-file if your dependent’s SSN was claimed on another return
https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-takes-steps-to-help-prevent-refund-delays-by-accepting-duplicate-dependent-returns-with-an-ip-pin-for-2025-filing-season-taxpayers-encouraged-to-sign-up-soon-for-ip-pin-online-account
https://www.irs.gov/identity-theft-fraud-scams/get-an-identity-protection-pin
The other remedy to an e-file rejected for duplicate use of a child's SSN is to file your own return that claims the children by mail. Then the IRS will sort out the duplicate use of the children's SSN's. As far as the IRS is concerned, what matters is who has had physical custody of the children.

In order to use desktop download for 2025, you need Windows 11 on a PC; the desktop software for 2025 will not run on Windows 10. You can still use online TurboTax instead of the download.

If you have lived apart from your spouse for at least the last six months of 2025 you could file as Head of Household. If you have income of your own from working and have had custody of the children then you can file Head of Household and get the child-related refundable credits like child tax credit and earned income credit, as well as the childcare credit if you paid someone to take care of your children so you could work. If you file married filing separately you are not eligible for earned income credit or the childcare credit, and your standard deduction is less. Head of Household is better for you.
Am I Head of Household?

What is a "qualifying person" for Head of Household?
If you qualify as Head of Household, when you enter your marital status (single or married filing separately) into MyInfo, and then enter your qualifying dependent, TurboTax will offer HOH as your filing status.
