You cannot change the tax year. The current online program is for 2024 only. Only a 2024 return can be prepared online and only a 2024 return can be e-filed.
Online preparation and e-filing for 2021, 2022, and 2023 is permanently closed.
Note: The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac. It cannot be used on a mobile device.
To file a return for a prior tax year
If you need to prepare a return for 2021, 2022, or 2023 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign, and mail the return(s)
https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/
You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.
Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

I made contributions to my HSA account during 2024 (didn't know I was ineligible due to being claimed as a dependent on my parents' tax return). I did not remove the contributions before April 15, 2025. I understand that I will need to pay the 6% penalty for excess contributions (and selected that option in the form). But I am going in circles trying to e-File my return. The issue is in Form 8889-T, where it asks which HDHP plan I had (for reference, I was on my parents' plan for the whole year, and my own plan in tandem from July-December). I cannot select any of the options because it just says "[Self/Family] should not be checked. You indicated on the Federal Information Wks that taxpayer could be claimed as a dependent of another, which makes taxpayer ineligible." Please help -- this is driving me crazy!! Thanks 🙂

See if you have the download in your account. Since you now have to log into an Intuit Account all your downloads and licenses are listed there (even if you bought it from somewhere else) so if you need to download to install it again or install on another computer, even on the other operating system (Windows, Mac). And the download will always be up to date with all the updates. Access your program downloads here https://shop.turbotax.intuit.com/commerce/account/secure/login.jsp?pagecontext=download Or How to contact Turbo Tax https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/using-turbotax/help/how-do-i-contact-turbotax/00/26991

Hi, I have a CD so I am installing from there to my PC - not online. I did say 'Yes' to the update but nothing happens, other than sometimes I get an error message saying that the download program or the updater is not installed. I have checked the install and both programs are there in the folders they should be in. (Since 2023 is a past year I generally don't update once I file taxes - so saying 'No' to the update is not an issue)

Just a thought. Did your credit card payment go through? You have to pay the fees before you can print and to mail.

to avoid penalty you need to have paid thru withholding and "timely" (usually quarterly) estimated taxes, the lesser of - 100% of your 2024 tax (110% if AGI > 150k as MFJ), or 90% of your 2025 tax. You owe the remaining amount of tax when you file in April. If your 2024 tax was $2220 and 2025 was much higher due to cap gains then presumably your safe harbor would be based on 100/110% of this prior year $2220 - but if you already paid that or more thru withholding you don't need to pay more thru estimated taxes. If you are below that amount, to the extent you can increase withholding to meet it that will reduce the amount due from estimated taxes without penalty. If you have to pay estimated tax to meet safe harbor but are doing so unevenly i.e you missed Q1/2 and just pay a one-off amount in Q3, then you will be assessed a penalty by default as IRS considers your income earned evenly and ES needs to be split evenly over the year (whereas withholding is always considered "timely" even if it comes later in the year). You may be able reduce or eliminate this penalty by filing Form 2210 annualized income method; it depends your specific situation and the size of any penalty whether it's worthwhile as it's additional calculations for your AGI etc by quarter. So I'd suggest - check withholding before paying estimated tax and increase it if needed/possible - remember to set aside whatever final tax you need to pay in April - check Form 2210 for more details which has the safe harbor calculation on lines 1-9

I have spent about 3 hours trying to install TT2023 on my new Win 11 desktop. Part of those 3 hours have been reading all the posts I can find about bypassing the update process. (TTax 2024 download is fine, but I like to have the last 3 years installed if I need to go back to past years.) I have done the following: 1. Uninstalled and re-installed 4 times - using default location for install 2. Right-click to 'run as administrator' 3. Turned off anti-virus programs 4. Downloaded the 'superpatch' for this year and it tells me that I do not have 2023 installed?? The main problem is that the 'No' button for doing an update is greyed out so I cannot bypass the update, my only choice is to say yes and then it fails. What else can be done???

@amybatesny wrote: Turbo tax indicates we are unable to file by mail since we paid by credit card. What should we do? That doesn’t sound right. You can’t file by mail? What does it say exactly? What did you pay by credit card? The Turbo Tax fees or a tax due? Try entering 0 for the AGI. The IRS might have processed your return later so the AGI didn't get entered in time. Especially if you mailed it. That works for most people. See, https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/rejections/help/what-if-i-entered-the-correct-agi-and-i-m-still-getting-an-e-file-reject/00/27031 How to correct the AGI in the Online version https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/agi/help/where-do-i-correct-my-agi-in-turbotax-online/00/26311 If you can’t get it to efile you will have to print and mail it. https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/printing/help/how-do-i-print-and-mail-my-return-in-turbotax-online/00/26258 Be sure to attach copies of your W2s and any 1099s that have withholding on them. You have to mail federal and state in separate envelopes because they go to different places. Get a tracking number from the post office when you mail them for proof of filing.

It should be just as easy or easier to enter the 1099R manually. Choose Skip Import or Enter a different way, then choose Type it in myself. Enter a 1099R under Federal Taxes Wages & Income Then scroll way down to Retirement Plans and Social Security Then IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R) – Click Start For state boxes, if box 16 is empty or zero then for box 16 State Distribution put the same amount that’s in box 1. If box 14 is blank you can leave boxes 14,15 & 16 blank.

This worked for me after spending a couple of hours of how to fix it. I purchased Contingent Income Notes from a broker and received a Form 1099. The payments are identical to interest payments on a bond. Turbotax kept subjecting me to a self employment tax. I finally checked the box that the business was not meant to earn money, even though it clearly was, and the self employment tax was removed. Turbotax should enhance the product to make this more intuitive.

Are you just starting 2024? You only have until Oct 15 to finish and efile so you need to hurry. You can Transfer the prior year from the Desktop program into the current Online versions. You need to have the file ending in .tax2023 on your computer. So be sure you know where it is. But if you already started an online return you will have to clear it out and start over or set up a new online account. How to clear and start over https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/using-turbotax/help/how-do-i-clear-and-start-over-in-turbotax-online/00/26444 How to transfer into Turbo Tax Online, including from a pdf file or other software or from the Desktop program https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/entering-importing/help/how-do-i-transfer-last-year-s-return-into-turbotax-online/00/25953 And How to switch from Desktop to Online https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/tax-topics/help/how-do-i-switch-from-turbotax-cd-download-to-turbotax-online/00/859756 If you used the Desktop program before you may not like the Online version. It has less features and no Forms Mode. All the Online versions do not have the same forms so you may need to upgrade to a higher version. You can only do 1 return. Your return is only saved online so be sure to save both the .tax2024 data file and the pdf file to your computer when you are done. In case you need to amend in the future or if you need a copy to get a loan or something. You might not be able to access your online return when you need a copy.

Additional info: This K-1 had income from two different activities - ordinary business income (loss) and Net rental income, so I had to create two K-1s (per TT instructions) This same K-1 had K-3 foreign tax credit info for two countries - IN and MEX. Per TT instructions I put one country on each of the two K-1s. This same K-1 had Box 20, Code Z, Section 199A information listing two partners - I put the info for one partner on each of the two K-1s. I did try editing the numbers. Last year, one community member was able to resolve the error by deleting the 0. This did not work for me.

Basically I was unable to dwonload and save the shorter filing copy of my return or version of return with key attachments only. Only download option was for the full return with all attachments, which is an big document and is a limitation compared to what I was able to do with my Turbotax desktop windows version in the past. This is the first time I am using Mac version since I am no longer using Windows machines. Spoke to TT support and they acknowledged that they are NOT able to address the TT desktop Mac problem with downloading other tax return versions. TT says they have. really tried but have no solution to this problem and may not have a solution for future Mac desktop versions either. Said that it would be better to try Turbo tax live next year, but I have privacy concerns with my data being secured by Intuit, not that it is any more secure than anything else these days.... Oh well
