Are you claiming the foreign earned income exclusion or the foreign tax credit? Do you have three sources of income? You mentioned a W-2, a T4, and self-employment. Where do you actually do the work for each source of income? A W-2 could be foreign income if you work outside the U.S. for a U.S. company. Do you do the work for the Canadian employer in Canada or in the U.S.? Where do you do the self-employment work ("side hustle")? Where exactly do you see that TurboTax is assuming that all of your income is foreign income? Are you using TurboTax Online or the desktop TurboTax software installed on your computer? Which edition are you using (Basic, Deluxe, Premier, etc.)?

Thanks.  That is what I plan on doing.

Well I am hoping I can just upgrade my computer to the new Windows --- that will be something i ask geek Squad about.  My computer works fine -- so I hate to have to buy a new one ---- but I also know the game and realize that I may have too.   Thanks for your answers --- are you 100% sure that being able to open prior year versions of TT will still be possible with Windows 11 ?  If so that is a big relief --- thanks

I am an independent consultant / contractor that performs all work / services from the USA and thus they report the income on 1099NEC.   I am not clear on reply. So, if I visit this company for 1-2 days on a temporary basis in Canada, will I be exempt from having to report income in Canada and thus not have to file a Canadian tax return as all income will be treated as US sourced income?

Sorry. ...   Do you have the correct taxable amount on Form 1040 Line 4b. ? If that is all true then only Form 8606 has to be attached. After you e-File, get Form 1040-X from IRS website and mail it in with your <year> 8606, which you can also get in fillable PDF  Note: when you are not changing any dollar amounts on your amending 1040-X, you can leave all the lines 1-23 EMPTY. Part II explanation: "Did a conversion but didn't include Form 8606 with e-File". Done this way, you sign 1040-X, not 8606. Do not include your old 1040 nor your revised 1040 because they are identical.   @PCD21

Unless you are employed by the IRS, your W-2 is not coming directly to the tax software from the IRS.    If you "imported" your W-2, you imported it from your employer's payroll site, not from the IRS.    W-2's are issued by employers.   You can enter a W-2 by hand, or you can import it with certain key information, or if you use the mobile app, you can snap a photo of the W-2.   No matter what method you use to enter your W-2, you need to check it very carefully to make sure it was entered correctly before you file your tax return.  Sometimes data imports incorrectly or incompletely, or images glitch when you snap a photo.  It is imperative for a user to double check all data before filing.

And the FICA  "withholding" in boxes 4 & 6 is actually a mandatory tax, not the same kind of withholding as in box 2.     Why SS is taxable.   Best explanation I read from Hal_AL……. When you were working, you only paid half of your SS tax. Your employer paid the other half. At first SS benefits were tax free; then Congress decided to tax 50% of it. You know; the half your employer paid for. But all those rich retirees were still getting half that money tax free, so they settled (for now) on taxing 85% of it. Then they ran for re-election on the 15% they "saved" you.

Social Security benefits have been taxable since the early 1980's.     If Social Security is your ONLY income you do not have to file a tax return.   But if you have other income along with the SS benefits, then up to 85% of your SS may be taxable income depending on the amount of the other income.     You need to file a federal return if half your Social Security plus your other income is   Single or Head of Household      $25,000 Married Filing Jointly                  $32,000 Married Filing Separately            $0
Ok Thank you!  Thats what I figured and really do now understand why people are upset over that and then parying tax again on my SS check.

Your question is odd---you seem to be asking if you pay tax on tax that was withheld.   Your gross pay is in box 1 of your W-2.   Box 2 of your W-2 shows how much you received after taxes were withheld.   Boxes 3 - 6 show the Social Security and Medicare that were withheld from the income you received.   Perhaps it would help if you read what each box on your W-2 means: https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tips/irs-tax-forms/what-is-a-w-2-form/L6VJbqWl5

That’s not my question. Simply stated, do I or anyone have to pay tax on the FICA withheld?

Yes to everything.    You still will be able to transfer the .tax2024 file into 2025 usual.  And you should be able to install and run the prior  year programs too.  I recently upgraded my computer to Windows 11 from 10 and my prior year programs open.    Everything should be the same except you need Windows 11 to run Turbo Tax 2025.   We went though the same situations in the past like going from Windows 8 to Windows 10.     Will you be upgrading your Windows 10 to 11 or getting a new computer?

I understand that Turbo Tax (TT) 2025 will not run on Windows 10.    My Question is since Turbo Tax now requires that everyone get Window 11 --- will  TT 2025 still be able to translate data from a 2024 return that was completed on Windows 10 ?   Also, when doing my current year Taxes I typically open up previous year versions of Turbo Tax  --- I am assuming that capability will no longer be supported which is NOT GOOD.   HOPEFULLY, the software developers will work some Magic so that older versions of Turbo Tax can be opened on Windows 11.   I am hoping that a Turbo Tax (Intuit) customer service representative will respond to this question --- so we all get the correct information.   Thank you.

I submitted my taxes for about the 15th year with turbo tax. I have never had any issues until these last two filing years. My W-2's automatically gets transferred over from the IRS and this past two years it has been changed and my income tax was held. It got released the first year after realizing that it was wrong. Then this year it happened again. I trust turbotax and have been doing this the same way so I'm not sure what was going on. I have now been waiting over 200 days for my tax return to be released to me. This needs to be fixed. Now I am put into a financial bind because of this. I will be saying that I will no longer be using TurboTax.
