Dear TurboTax Canada Team, I'm writing to express concerns regarding the user experience of your tax filing software, particularly for seniors and individuals with low income. While assisting my mother with her tax return—which included only a T4A(P) and a T5007—I observed that the software prompted her with numerous questions about self-employment income, which were not applicable to her situation. This led to confusion and unnecessary stress. My mother relies on disability and social assistance benefits, and her tax situation is straightforward. However, the software's prompts suggested she needed to upgrade to a paid version, despite her eligibility for the free edition. This experience has been consistent over several years, leading to frustration and a sense of being misled. I believe that TurboTax should be more intuitive and accommodating for users like my mother. The software should accurately interpret T4A(P) and T5007 slips without defaulting to self-employment prompts, and it should clearly indicate when a user qualifies for the free version. Ensuring clarity and ease of use for seniors and low-income individuals is essential. I hope you will take this feedback seriously and make the necessary adjustments to improve the user experience for all Canadians, regardless of their financial situation. - A PAYING CUSTOMER OF YOURS FOR YEARS AND A SON OF A MOTHER WHO IS MISLEAD BY YOUR SERVICES.

It has been 4 months since i E-Filed for my taxes, and i have not seen my money arrive in my bank. As of typing this i did get off the phone with one of the IRS representatives and they told me that it shows that you guys sent it, my bank confirms they didn't see it get deposited into my bank, i watched my bank after 28 days and more and i called to see if there was any errors or delays and i was told i did put in everything right. By now I'm assuming my return was either mishandled or I'm one of the people waiting to get their tax returns this month; It's been absolutely difficult. The IRS representative did tell me that the problem could be the fees from using your services; do you take all of your tax payers money in fees alone?

Thank you. I changed the spouse AGI to the ORGINAL, but left the Primary alone (Amended), as that is what the person at Turbo Tax (800-446-8848) told me to do, even though I pointed out that it made no sense. If it is rejected again, should I try entering the ORIGINAL AGI for the Primary and the spouse as $0? Also, any idea how many times can I try refiling? (agent could not answer that question). We are in a disaster-affected zone, so have until October.
Thank you.

You may want to ask what exactly their "tax fee" is for. Legally, they just need to give you W-2Gs (or depending on how it is structured, 1099-MISCs) that report your large winnings. I don't know what it is for, but it is hypothetically possible that they are asking you to pay that fee to get an itemized list that would enable you to report the "session method". In SOME cases, that can significantly lower the tax that you owe (but in other cases, it could increase your tax versus only reporting your W-2Gs).

Interesting. I had the same issue this year. Turbo Tax agent claimed that it is an IRS problem, not theirs.

First of all you should use the AGI from the ORIGINAL return not an Amended return. If that doesn’t work try entering 0 for the AGI. Try entering 0 for the AGI. The IRS might have processed your return later so the AGI didn't get entered in time. Especially if you mailed it. That works for most people. See, https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/rejections/help/what-if-i-entered-the-correct-agi-and-i-m-still-getting-an-e-file-reject/00/27031 How to correct the AGI in the Online version https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/agi/help/where-do-i-correct-my-agi-in-turbotax-online/00/26311 If you can’t get it to efile you will have to print and mail it. https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/printing/help/how-do-i-print-and-mail-my-return-in-turbotax-online/00/26258 Be sure to attach copies of your W2s and any 1099s that have withholding on them. You have to mail federal and state in separate envelopes because they go to different places. Get a tracking number from the post office when you mail them for proof of filing.

I am back to using Turbo Tax after a 2 year hiatus when I used a tax preparer. We file jointly -- hence we both have the same AGI. When I efiled, I entered the AGI from our Amended Return, which I retrieved from the IRS website. (Spent an hour setting up an account). The return was rejected because of IND-032-04 "'SpousePriorYearAGIAmt' in the Return Header must match the e-File database". Since we did not use Turbo Tax last year, I am not sure what this means. It also doesn't make sense that only the spouse AGI was rejected, since we file jointly. Any thoughts? The advice from a phone call to someone at Turbo Tax, who was clearly unsure what to do and did not seem to understand my question regarding entering different AGIs, suggested changing only the spouse AGI, even though that created 2 different AGIs. She also could answer whether the problem was because a tax-prepared had efiled our return last year.

@Classicarc wrote: My current accountant is telling me the EIDL Loan, (not grant) does not increase basis. He referenced IRS code that says a personal guarantee on a loan doesn't automatically allow basis increase. If this is an S-corporation, your current accountant is correct. The corporation receiving a loan from a third party does not increase Basis.

Thank you @PaulaM . I don't think I need it. But it brings up the question why TurboTax makes it confusing by creating it in the first place, and flagging it as an error?

@john54linda57 There is a new question this year asking if you lived in a foreign place. People have been answering it wrong or skipping it. Go back through the Social Security entries. And it is for each spouse. So if you have a low amount on 1040 line 6b you might have answered wrong for 1 person. You can go back into your tax return but be very careful not to change anything. Click on Add a State to let you back into your return. You should see this screen after you enter your Social Security and hit Continue. What is checked Yes or No?

Are you using the Online version? Call in and ask them to look at it. Ask them for the Desktop program so you can open your return and see the actual forms and detail worksheets. Your 1099R box 4 are MORE than 1040SR line 25b? Could you have entered a 1099R in another place as a W2 or other kind of 1099? I can see how 1040 line 25b could be more than the 1099Rs like if you had federal withholding on something else like Social Security or 1099B for investments but it shouldn’t be less than 1099R. Did you miss entering a 1099R? Are 1040SR boxes 4a and 5a for the gross amounts right? You can get a sanitized file of your return and post the token number here and I’ll try to get an employee to look at it. The file is stripped out of all your Personal Info TurboTax Online 1. Sign into your online account and select Take me to my return 2. Locate the Tax Tools on the left hand side of the screen. 3. A Drop down will appear. Click on Tools, then Share my file with agent. 5. This will generate a message that a diagnostic copy will be created. Click on OK, the tax file gets sanitized and transmitted to us. 6. Please provide the Token Number that was generated onto a response and we will give it to the moderator. @john54linda57 - TT will calculate it for you. however, since you answered you live in a foreign country (is that correct?), TT takes that into account when determining the taxable amount. That foreign country question is new in 2024 and has thrown a number of people "off kilter" by not answering it correctly.

Thank you for your reply. I took screenshots of everything I did in TT, and those numbers match with what displays in TT ("My Tax Data") (for the 1099-R's). I entered everything manually.

Yes. You have 3 years to file for a refund. Did you fill out 2023 yet? Sorry it's too, late to start a 2023 or prior online return or use the mobile app, either on Turbo Tax or the IRS. And too late to efile 2023. To do a prior year return you have to buy the Desktop program here, https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products You will need a full Windows or Mac to install it on. If you have a simple return and want to file for free you can fill out the forms by hand. Here are some basic forms..... Here is the 2023 1040 return https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/f1040--2023.pdf or if you want bigger type use 1040SR for Seniors, https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/f1040s--2023.pdf 2023 1040 Instructions https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/i1040gi--2023.pdf 2023 EIC and Tax Tables https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/i1040tt--2023.pdf Schedules 1-3 https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/f1040s1--2023.pdf https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/f1040s2--2023.pdf https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/f1040s3--2023.pdf Don’t forget your state. And you will have to print and mail your returns. So be sure to attach copies of your W2s and any 1099s that have withholding on them. You have to mail federal and state in separate envelopes because they go to different places. Get a tracking number from the post office when you mail them for proof of filing. Then when you file for 2024 you need to enter 0 for the 2023 AGI since you are filing 2023 late.
