You may be able to deduct the cost of work-related education expenses paid during the year if you're: A self-employed individual An Armed Forces reservist A qualified performing artist A fee-based state or local government official A disabled individual with impairment-related education expenses To be deductible, your expenses must be for education that (1) maintains or improves skills needed in your present work or (2) your employer or the law requires to keep your present salary, status or job. However, even if the education meets either of these tests, the education can't be part of a program that will qualify you for a new trade or business or that you need to meet the minimal educational requirements of your present trade or business. Education expenses incurred during temporary absence from your work may also be deductible, but the education must be to maintain or improve skills needed in your present work. After your temporary absence, you must return to the same general type of work. Usually, absence from work for one year or less is considered temporary. Expenses that you can deduct include: Tuition, books, supplies, lab fees, and similar items Certain transportation and travel costs Other educational expenses, such as the cost of research and typing To determine if your work-related expenses are deductible, see Are my work-related education expenses deductible?   Self-employed individuals include education expenses on Schedule C (Form 1040), Profit or Loss From Business (Sole Proprietorship)

Based on California tax board website, if tax underpayment due amount is more than 500$, there will be 5% penalty on due amount.  However, when I created my california state return using turbotax it is not generating any penalty. Without this penalty tab, I can not use annualized income installment method. So there is no way to pay or reduce penalty in system. I can see that system has generate FTB 5805 form but it is blank and I can not edit manually.  I think there is a bug in software. How do I report it? I have created diagnosis file.
I did that and my return was rejected for a second time.

I entered 5 digit PINS as instructed in Turbo Tax. Both returns were rejected for incorrect PINs. The Turbo Tax instructions state that in the cast of the PIN not being accepted, we should go to www.irs.gov/get-an-ippin. I did as the Turbo Tax instructions indicated and got my SIX DIGIT ippin to file my return. The IRS states that this 65 DIGIT pin is required to E File the return. The Turbo Tax page to enter the pins will not accept the IRS SIX DIGIT pin. Using the actual IRS pin means that the page gives an error message that incorrect or extra digits are used.   I tried again to submit my taxes and they were rejected again.

This is still a problem, as of April 15 2025 -- marking the number of 3520 filed separately on the 8938, with no other information, results in a "can't e-file your return".  Not only does it prevent you e-filing the federal return, but it prevents you from e-filing a CA state return.  As has been pointed out, you have to file a 3520 ON PAPER, separately, regardless of whether you e-file or print your return, and TT doesn't need to have anything to do with the contents of a 3520.   Is there another place to raise this issue that might actually get it addressed?
