My son is 19 years old and was only a part time student, as he only took 11 hours max both semesters. I do not think I can claim as a dependent. However, he had a part time job and earned some income. Can he claim the tuition reported to him on Form 1098-T to claim the Education Tax Credit even though technically I paid it.

I too have this exact problem. I am being forced to admit I had a high-deductible health plan to remove errors in Turbo Tax smart check. What correction can my ex-company's payroll department make to get me out of this bind? One thing I can think of is to remove code W entry in W-2. Then what happens to my FSA contribution? Thanks

On my mac, I have the older TurboTax (which the 2024 version didn't list). And then it failed to import the taxes from 2023 pdf file.

Hi, I encountered this issue as well and basically just ignored it and filed anyway. Waiting to see if my return will be accepted. Was yours accepted?

Quick follow up... I did some more looking online and it appears that the MA student loan interest deduction is tied to the Federal one. I.e., if they cannot take the Federal one, then they can't take the MA one. I am not 100% certain of this though as they cannot take the Federal deduction since they can be claimed as a dependent by us, but the software knows this and is still allowing the MA deduction for it. I would think that the software would know (it knew that they couldn't take the Federal student loan interest deduction). In the end, we're only talking about a $20 difference, so it may not be worth it, but we'd all prefer they don't pay any more in taxes than they have to.

If you are a resident of WV, but in 2024 you spent less than 30 days in the state, you need to go back to the residency section at the beginning of the WV tax return, and change your West Virginia Residency to Special Nonresident (Form IT-140).
Next, on Tell Us Your State of Residence, choose Out of State. If that is your situation, your active duty military pay will be exempt from WV tax.

Hello, I am single, under age 55. I was covered by an HDHP for May through Dec of 2024. I had no coverage before that, and beginning Jan 2025 I am no longer covered. As such I have no intention to use the "last-month rule", because I will not satisfy the "testing period", and hope the last-month rule will not somehow be automatically applied. In the Instructions for form 8889 (2024) - Part I - Line 3, it gives a list of possible rules to apply in determining what amount to enter on line 3. But it doesn't seem to me that any of those rules apply to me. What instructions do I follow to determine an amount to enter? Thank you.
