TurboTax doesn’t support 1040-NR after IRS accept my return

I use TurboTax file federal and state (CA and WA) tax returns, but I realize it doesn’t support 1040-NR after IRS accept my return. I haven’t got the tax refund yet.

1. Should I use sprintax to file 1040-NR before Apr 15 as a superseded tax return?

2. Or should I wait for IRS to give me a refund / reject the tax return, then file an amended tax return? If so, do I just need to file a 1040-NR and 1040-X to amend, or are there other forms I need to include? Finally, do I need to mail the forms when amending, or can I efile the amendment as well?

3. Whether I file superseded or amended tax returns, do I only need to file them for federal (and the IRS will automatically reconcile my state returns), or do I also need to file them for state returns?

TurboTax doesn’t support 1040-NR after IRS accept my return

Let's address these questions one by one.

1. Should I use Spintax to file 1040-NR before Apr 15 as a superseded tax return?

2. Or should I wait for IRS to give me a refund / reject the tax return, then file an amended tax return? If so, do I just need to file a 1040-NR and 1040-X to amend, or are there other forms I need to include? Finally, do I need to mail the forms when amending, or can I E-file the amendment as well?

  • It would be wise to have the status of the return completely processed.
  • Did you file a Form 1040, and what is the status in TurboTax?
  • If it was accepted you can click here to see the status of your return  Check Your Refund .
  • You can call toll-free at 800-829-1040 or contact a Taxpayer Assistance Center Local IRS Office

3. Whether I file superseded or amended tax returns, do I only need to file them for federal (and the IRS will automatically reconcile my state returns), or do I also need to file them for state returns?

  • You will not amend.
  • No, The IRS will not reconcile your state tax return.
  • Spintax can prepare the state return.
